Geek Bound Fashion

If you know anything about geeky fashion, our guest this week needs no introduction. I’m so excited to chat with Catherine Elhoffer from Elhoffer Design about her nerdy inspired fashion collections and get a peek behind the scenes of her business.

Spring is upon us! It may be a new season, but it isn’t time to put away those winter coats yet. In this post, I use the style tips from Staying Warm and Geek Chic Part 1 and Part 2 for an outfit that works for these transitional days.

For this look, I’m mixing some patterns and textures. It’s something both cozy and a little edgy, and my inspiration is the one and only Winter Soldier.

In my first post on Staying Warm and Geek Chic, I used a winter coat to get multi-seasonal wear out of my clothes. The outfit was very casual and comprised of clothing basics. For the outfit featured in this post, I’m leaning heavier into the geek chic part of my topic.

Don’t worry though! You’ll still be cozy because the essential piece here is also a winter coat. Taking a page from the Disney/geekbound handbook, I let a character and elements of its universe inspire this outfit. Let’s travel through time and space aboard the TARDIS.

The Thirteenth Doctor’s costume had to be exceptional, while also balancing an almost impossible set of contradictions. It had to reflect the character’s history, while also letting the first woman Doctor stand out on her own. It had to be grounded in women’s fashion, while also navigating its political and practical pitfalls. It had to be a little odd and a little offbeat to be true to the Doctor, while also serving as the cornerstone of a rebranding effort that could be duplicated, packaged, and sold around the world.

Try and tell me the 13th Doctor’s style isn’t effortlessly perfect. I dare you.

The response to the 13th Doctor’s costume has been overwhelmingly positive since long before her season premiered. In fact, if you pick up a copy of The Sartorial Geek Magazine Issue 03, it features a great article all about her style. Feminine but practical and not losing that quirky Doctor charm, there really is a lot to love about her look. Her trenchcoat, her lace-up boots, her ethereally cool blue culottes, and who could forget the yellow suspenders? What’s not to love?

I’ll answer that for you: nothing, obviously. She is flawless and so is her outfit. So flawless, in fact, that I’m urging you all to take a page out of her style book at your earliest convenience. While suspenders and culottes might be a little harder for your average human to embrace, the current rainbow stripe trend will make it especially easy to embrace your inner doctor this fall.

I love Besamé Cosmetics. I have made that very clear in previous posts and I’m not ashamed to sound redundant. They check all of my boxes: No animal testing? Check. Nerdy collaborations? Check. Natural and responsible ingredients? Check. Every shade of red lipstick my little heart could ever desire? Check. Vintage-inspired to make me feel like a pinup queen when applying my makeup? Okay, not totally necessary for my makeup, but CHECK!

Agent Carter Passport Palette

It should come as no surprise to you that Besamé was one of my first (and only, honestly) stops at New York Comic Con a few weeks ago. Did I need more makeup? Well, no, but they were having the most amazing NYCC sale and I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t take advantage of it. For a seriously discounted price, I finally was able to pick up their Agent Carter Passport Shadow Palette.

It’s officially autumn. It feels like just yesterday I was writing this same post about summer… and yet Haloween is in ten days! (Where did summer go?) But, at least the fall ’18 trends you’ll be seeing plenty of all season aren’t as bizarre as tiny sunglasses and clear PVC purses. In fact, most of them are very wearable (except maybe the enormous outerwear that was all over the F/W ’18 runways– what even is that?)

And the best part about a new season of trends? Finding new ways to add a nerdy flair to them! Here are some easy ways to put your geek chic twist on what’s in style this season!
