ICYMI, our Fall SGFashionFix Challenge has already begun! It runs through the entire month of October. Here are the prompts!

Our first week’s prompt was Pirates, and I wanted to share how I built a pirate outfit from pieces I already had in my closet. I figure this might be useful if you need a last minute Halloween costume or wanted to make more use out of your clothes.

Pick a Base

As with all my closet cosplays, I start with colors and/or silhouettes. I didn’t have a particular character in mind for this pirate fit, so I focused on the shape. The color scheme was then based on whatever I ended up using. In this case, I knew I wanted to use this red dress with a high-low skirt as my base since when I think of a typical woman’s pirate costume, it often has a kind of high-low hemline (to mimic skirts with skirt lifters).

Create the Silhouette

I don’t have a corset-type top, so I tried a few options to get that cinched waist, flowy skirt silhouette. My options were a wide fabric belt, a vest, and a dress shirt. Ultimately, I went with the shirt because it has a built-in wide waist. The belt and vest would’ve worked really well too, but I liked the that the details on the shirt gave the overall look more texture.

Then, I accessorized. My main belt was one with a flashy buckle, but I layered a plainer one underneath. The brown double-belt also helped to tie in my brown knee-high boots.

Finishing touches

My cherry-on-top for this outfit was a red military-style vest. Military style jackets have been one of my favorite styles, so I’m lucky I have a few of these kinds of pieces in my closet. They come in handy in these situations! But as with many pirate and pirate adjacent characters, the coat doesn’t make the corsiar! I think the key is accessories. I piled on necklaces and rings, but you can layer more skirts or use kerchiefs and earrings or put on a fancy hat! I encourage you to get creative!!

Hope you enjoyed Pirate week and this look at one of my favorite closet costumes! The next prompt is Cottagecore. It should be easy to do with it being the coziest of all seasons.

downs. You learn a lot about a relationship when trapped together in a small NYC apartment. We had always thought that we were a strong couple, but the cracks were emphasized over this concentrated amount of time together and we realized that heated arguments would lead to bad feelings and more arguments. We needed a calmer, safer way to communicate. One way to do this was through tea dates.

We love our seasonal #SGFashionFix challenge so much, it’s going all year long! Please enter as much or as little as you’d like, pick and choose your favorite prompts, and feel free to tell your friends.
