Being a book nerd doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the smartest person in the room… but it usually means you’re the most likely person to try and sneak a book into a party. Tony Stark is a known genius (billionaire/playboy/philanthropist), but can you really picture him contentedly curled up with a book and cup of coffee on his down time? He’d go stir crazy and invent a robot to download the information into his brain, or something. So without further ado… Here’s a list of our favorite super-powered book nerds.

Dr. Strange

You know that scene during the training montage where we see Steven Strange asleep… while his spirit is awake and reading? I involuntarily choked on my popcorn with envy. Anyone who would jump at the chance to read in their sleep is definitely a book nerd.

Not to mention, he used his new magical abilities to immediately liberate books from the restricted section of the library.

And in a moment that might be so glorious it breaks the internet… Benedict Cumberbatch (in full Dr. Strange garb), went into a comic book store to purchase a Dr. Strange comic.

Professor X

It’s hard to picture Patrick Stewart ever playing a character who doesn’t read classic literature in their downtime… Despite being surrounded by the trappings of cutting edge technological and genetic advancement, Charles Xavier spends a lot of time reading for pleasure and teaching his students about the classics.

Wonder Woman

Growing up on Themyscira, Diana Prince had virtually unlimited access to their vast historical records – both fictional and non-fictional. While she probably often tried to shirk her studies in favour of training and exploring the island, she definitely enjoyed curling up with a good book to relax.

In the recent movie adaptation, she informs a stunned Steve Trevor that she has read all 12 volumes of “Clio’s treatises on bodily pleasure”, which we can probably assume wasn’t mandatory academic reading.

The Flash

Barry Allen is a total nerd in many ways, and books are just one of them. It probably helps that he can read an entire novel in a few seconds flat.

One of my favorite moments in the TV series (which all superhero fans should watch) is when Dr. Martin Stein comments, “I thought people your age didn’t read actual books anymore.”

“Oh, I’m the only one.” Barry replies with a reassuring smile. It’s just too cute.

Loki

OK, Loki is technically a villain… but he has his hero moments and has won over the entire Marvel fandom with his adorableness (it helps that Tom Hiddleston is a total gentleman in real life, too, but that’s a whole other blog post!). We know Loki has always been the more bookish of the two Odinson brothers, and when he’s locked up in Thor: The Dark World, what little furnishings he has in his cell includes a fair number of books.
