Dr. Love Wave and the Experiments is a fun comic series by Greg Gustin that deals with complex issues. It’s mostly sci-fi based, about a sci-fi surf rock band called “Dr Love Wave and the Experiments” and the lives of the members of said band.

Milt, the main character of our surf rock band, recently lost his mom to cancer and is struggling with grief. This is featured in the comic in a beautiful way in that it’s not too heavy, but just enough for us as readers to grieve along with him.

Our band lives in a town where the harbour has just dried up and strange things are happening. It seems that science-fiction creatures are slowly entering the town and causing a ruckus. Not only that, but a corrupt and rude councilman is trying to exploit the situation for his own gain.

The characters in this comic are relatable and funny, and the art is absolutely wonderful! Texting is integrated in an interesting and accessible way, and the characters are easily recognizable. Even in their sci-fi rock band get-ups, I found myself able to distinguish who was who!

There also appears to be a budding romance between our leading man, Milt, and a beautiful girl who is new in town named Mika! I love when adventure comics integrate romantic plots, and am excited to see how it plays out.

What I feel makes this comic very special is the semi-autobiographical nature. The author, Greg, also lost his mother to cancer and dedicates this comic to her.

This is a very unique and interesting comic series. After issues 1 and 2, I absolutely cannot wait for more. I would highly recommend this comic if you are a sci-fi fan, or a fan of comics about rock bands, or… honestly, any comics fan in general!

Brittany is a massive Doctor Who fan and all around geek. Rumour says they can be summoned like Beetlejuice if you say Doctor Who three times in a row, but that may just be a joke.
