Spring is upon us! It may be a new season, but it isn’t time to put away those winter coats yet. In this post, I use the style tips from Staying Warm and Geek Chic Part 1 and Part 2 for an outfit that works for these transitional days.

For this look, I’m mixing some patterns and textures. It’s something both cozy and a little edgy, and my inspiration is the one and only Winter Soldier.

Outfit 3: Winter Soldier

I had an advantage with this outfit because I own Elhoffer Design’s Winter Soldier-inspired knit shell. Like with Outfit 2, I picked one thing to style my outfit around, and this shell was my geeky starting point. Black pleather seemed like an aesthetic fit for the character, hence the choice of leggings, booties, and headband. I wanted my bottom to be a solid color and plain to let the design of the top shine.

Knit shells and sweaters vests are great for transitional seasons because they’re warm but not too warm. However, for those chilly morning and nights, I still need a jacket or coat.

As with Outfit 1, a coat is great for warmth if you don’t want to wear a lot of layers. Throw it on for the chilly hours. Shed it when the midday heat rolls in. This coat is standard non-geek wear and doesn’t particularly say Winter Soldier. The oversize cut, wool texture, and plaid pattern give off cozy vibes, but it goes with everything else because it’s a counterpoint to the sleeker, fitted outfit underneath.

Balance is the key to mixing patterns and textures. I knew the coat and the Winter Soldier shell had distinct prints, but I thought it would work out because the plaid is understated and shares a similar set of colors as the shell. The cozy wool texture works because the textures in the rest of the outfit are smoother and don’t compete with it.

I also pulled everything together by staying within shared colors, including the accessories and my make-up. The red was actually what gave me the idea to use this coat for this outfit instead of the more obvious choice of a moto-jacket, though that would look good here, too. It would just be a different vibe.

With this last outfit, I stepped outside of my comfort zone, and it worked out. So I hope this and my previous posts inspire you to try some new things with your styling! I’d love to see what you come up with!
