When the weather outside is frightful, I struggle with looking cute because I’m focused on how to not be cold. Add the fact that most of my geeky clothes are meant for warmer temps, and the result is a lot of same old same old outfits.
Cue the coat! This winter essential expands outfit possibilities, keeping looks fresh and fun. Now, dresses and spring-like pieces are wearable options again. So, in this mini-series of outfit posts, I’m showing you how to use a winter coat to stay warm and geek chic.
Outfit 1: Casual Cool
I’m starting with an outfit fundamental – the geeky T-shirt. If you’re like me, your go-to fandom clothes are tees and tanks. I love wearing them with leggings or jeans, but that combo is too cold in the winter, even in southern California! That’s where great outwear comes to the rescue.
Coats are usually longer than jackets and made of heavier fabrics. So they’re the best for warmth. They make wearing a shirt and jeans possible without adding a million extra layers. Here, I’m only wearing a light, long-sleeved inner-shirt under my tee.
Plus, a coat can add flair. I paired my pink leopard-print coat with this Jordandené x ReedPOP shirt and distressed jeans. The loud print makes a statement, dressing up an otherwise casual look. (My bold lip color not required!) It’s an easy way to change up a simple outfit without too much effort.
The best part of this for me is I get to wear some of my favorite shirts in the winter and still feel cozy. Of course, you don’t have to go this extra with your winter coat choice. A classic peacoat goes with everything and cuts a nice silhouette! The important thing is comfort and not getting frostbite.
What’s your favorite thing to wear under a winter coat?
