Hello 2020! It’s a new year and decade, which makes it a great time to set goals. Everyone has different resolution-makings habits, but last year, I tried something new. For my first outfit of the new year, I wore something that projected the feeling I wanted for the rest of the year. It was a creative way of declaring my intentions sartorially. I’m doing the same for 2020, and I’m sharing that idea and my New Year outfit with you.

A Year of Wonder

For 2019, Hamilton inspired my first OOTD because I thought it’d help me start the year with a “Rise Up” attitude. For 2020, I wanted something that evoked more hope while maintaining the spirit of resilience, especially since the end of the decade was trying for many of us. What outfit would encompass how I wanted to approach 2020 and beyond while also staying me?

One thing I’m looking forward to in 2020 is Wonder Woman 1984. Diana Prince exudes power and heroism, but all of that comes from a place of deep compassion. Her balance of strength and softness felt like the right mood to channel, not to mention the sense of wonder she both has and embodies.

Wonder Woman inspired outfits are some of my favorites because the primary colors in her costume make for easy styling. I broke down her costume to a red top, gold accents, and blue bottoms. The top I used is Elhofferdesign’s Wondrous Shell, which mimics Diana’s gold breastplate and red bodice, but you can achieve something similar with a red top and gold/yellow accessories. I paired this with wide-legged pants, but it would still be cute if you went with a blue skirt or jeans.

Decade of Bold

Since WW84 is set in the 80s, I wanted to tap into 1980s fashion trends. It was a decade of excess – big hair, mesh shirts, power shoulders, neon, and animal print. I’m also someone who loves to be extra with my fashion choices, so I had to indulge a little.

Since the colors of my top aren’t as shiny bright as Diana’s armor in WW84, my outwear could be louder. I chose a sweater jacket that basically looks like a tiger rug. It feels like wearing a blanket.

I especially like how this jacket works on multiple levels for my Wonder Woman theme. For example, the heavy material and tiger-rug look evoke a Themysciran style like a fur cloak/wrap. The bold pattern references the animal print trends of the 80’s. Then there’s the fact that the villain of the new movie is Cheetah. I know that’s a different big cat, but both tigers and cheetahs are fierce felines.

Finishing Touches

To bring in more of that fun 80s vibe, I added a pop of color and a mesh shirt. Wonder Woman’s iconic boots are red, but I couldn’t resist using these blue kitten heels. They’re not neon, but they’re bright, and the heels are capped in neon coral (there’s a peek of this in the photo above). Mesh shirts make a cute layering piece, and I love the star pattern on this one. Plus, 80’s fashion embodies “bigger” and “more,” and this shirt put another pattern and Wonder Woman motif into my outfit.

My final accessory was more subtle: a ring inspired by Diana’s tiara handmade by Sparkling Rampage. If you really want to lean into the 80’s though, I suggest bigger statement pieces for your jewelry.

New Year Outfit

The outfit I styled for the New Year is geeky because that’s very me, but your outfit doesn’t have to be geek-influenced if you don’t want it to. Just think about what makes you feel good and how you want to feel going into 2020. Let that guide your sartorial choices. I love color and statement pieces, so I worked those into this look. Wonder Woman is my New Year Outfit inspiration because she’s someone I aspire to be like. In her first movie, she comes to the realization that

It’s not about deserve; it’s about what you believe. And I believe in love.

and that’s something I want to remember this coming year.

What do you want 2020 to be like for you? Do you think you’ll try making a fashion statement of intent like I did? If you do, please let me know in the comments! I’d love to see your looks.
