Six the Musical is the feminist musical journey that every nerdy lady needs to listen to. I started listening to it about half a year ago, and I have been obsessed with it ever since.
Six is about the six wives of Henry VIII reclaiming their stories and sharing their places in history… but in the form of a pop concert. Each queen has an amazing solo song, letting the audience know exactly who they are and what they went through, and there are three amazing group songs.
There are a lot of misconceptions about these women and who they were, and the show is very deeply rooted in telling their stories. Don’t know who Katherine Howard was? You will now! I don’t know about everyone else, but I learned about Henry and not really his wives. This show turns that narrative on its head, giving the queens a chance to shine.
One of the most wonderful things about this show is that the roles are cast race and size blind, leading to an incredibly diverse group of women singing these incredible songs every night. The creators of the show are also intent on each actress keeping her own accent for the show, reminding the audience that these queens are their own women.
The costumes are gorgeous, and not only does every queen have her own colour, but every actress who’s an alternate gets her own coloured costume, which means she’s also recognized as a unique and special part of the cast.
The musical was written by two college students and, since hitting its jumping off point on the West End, has also been performed in Chicago, Boston, and Edmonton, as well as on two Norwegian cruise lines, and will soon hit Australia and Broadway.
Six is also one of the first ever musicals with a specific portion that encourages the audience to film! No, really – one of them shouts “get your phones out, you’re gonna wanna film this!” This means that not only do people get a special memory when they go to see it, it also means that you can spend hours and hours watching videos on YouTube. It’s called the MegaSix, in case you wanted to search it!
Spoilers aside, the story that the show tells is incredible, and the message of not comparing women to each other is very empowering and beautiful.
The studio album is available to listen to on Apple Music and Spotify. (Side note: No Way, Haus of Holbein, and Get Down are perfect for your running playlist.)
Please listen to Six. I promise it’s incredible.
