Yes, I’m still talking about Black Panther this week (rightfully so), and I’m not sorry about it. While last week’s style icon, Shuri, represents the new-age tech-savvy Wakanda, her mother, Queen Ramonda (played by Queen Angela Basset), dons gorgeous, regal looks that are most exemplary of the nation’s traditional culture.
Queen Ramonda, without a doubt, has the most royal wardrobe in her family. With looks fit for Wakandan royalty, you’ll find her in flared gowns that are simultaneously architectural masterpieces with matching headdresses in lieu of a crown.
The Queen’s headdresses are noted to be reminiscent of Isicholos from the South African Zulu nation. They are traditionally worn by married women for ceremonial celebrations and have adopted as part of “traditional” Zulu dress ensembles, worn almost exclusively during ceremonial events and pageants.
While Queen Ramonda’s version also seems to be traditional, it was actually made with the latest tech we know today: costume designer Ruth Carter sought out a 3D printing expert to produce the piece. Of course, it’s not as cool as vibranium-fueled Wakandan tech, but it’s still cool to see tradition and tech living together in harmony.
And as fun as that is, I think it’s safe to say the hair underneath it all still deserves a shout-out:
Ramonda’s snow-white locs are everything.
Seriously. So. Majestic.
