It was incredibly easy to pass The Bold Type as something that has been done time and time again. Young women in their 20’s, New York City, glamorized jobs at a women’s magazine… It’s all reminiscent of some of our favorite rom-coms from the early 2000’s, with a dash of Sex and the City sprinkled on top.
I was wrong and too quick to judge.
The Bold Type, in fact, provides my millennial self with what I was actually looking for in these earlier works. Yes, these girls still struggle with relationships. They scream on the subway and have secret meetings in their office closet full of designer clothes. But, The Bold Type certainly makes up for what it’s predecessors lacked. This show is modern, it’s real, it’s inclusive, and it’s diverse.
Kat Edison, one-third of the main trio, is no exception to these points.
There’s a lot to love about her and everything she does. We watch do everything from her explore her sexuality, to taking on Twitter trolls, to just straight-up punching racists in the street.
And, of course, she’s being featured on this particular segment for a reason. She looks really, really cute through it all.
Kat’s style really reflects her personality traits in the best way possible. She’s plucky, confident, spirited and free. And both are incredibly versatile– she will rock a pair of camo pants that look worn enough to have been thrifted straight from the era of grunge as soon as she will a fancy designer jumpsuit.
The Bold Type gives its audience a lot of wardrobe envy.
Not just because they all have a closet brimming with designer goods at their disposal (right in the workplace!), but also because Kat and the rest of the ladies of fictional Scarlet Magazine seem to be redefining what “office-appropriate” and business casual dressing really looks like.
In a time where dress-coding is a hot topic, I think that’s a really important aspect of this show that flies under the radar. Kat can wear a crop top. She can wear leather pants, and mismatched prints to work and still look professional and be taken seriously. Perhaps circumstances are different for someone who works at a women’s magazine. But, the reevaluation of the way women’s fashion is constantly scrutinized needs to start somewhere, right?
Regardless, I need Kat’s outfits. And I need them stat. You can catch Kat and the rest of The Bold Type gang streaming on Freeform & Hulu.
