I bought this book because I had listened to the soundtrack a couple of times. Be More Chill was adapted into a musical 2015, and I thought that I’d like a little more information about what happens, so I grabbed a paperback copy. It’s under 300 pages, so a relatively quick read, but it definitely wasn’t my favorite.

I’m not going to lie; I knew 50 pages in that I wasn’t really going to like Be More Chill. I do not like the writing style; it reads like it was written by a 12 year old. The descriptions are beyond sophomoric (“jean clad butt,” just reads awkward as heck), and that really disappointed me.

The idea behind Be More Chill is that Jeremy is not a cool dude. He has one friend, is super uncomfortable, and has a big crush on Christine. When Rich, a recently cool guy, tells him about the squib, a nano-computer that you swallow and turns you cool, Jeremy realizes it’s something he needs.

When he finally gets a squib, Jeremy changes. He’s all about hooking up, doing drugs, and sneaking out. But things aren’t as good as he thinks. As our worry usually is with AI, what happens when it starts to think for itself? Nothing good, I promise.

The concept of the book is really interesting, but I couldn’t get past the writing. It was very much not for me. If you’re interested, you can grab a copy on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or wherever you buy books! I do suggest just borrowing this one from your local library, though.
