I have a longstanding love affair with shoes. While women’s’ inconsistent sizing has failed me nearly all my life, I have never experienced that same pain and heartbreak with shoes, and thus, this lifelong obsession began. As a geek fashion veteran, I am aware that there are options out there for anyone who wants to add a bit of geek flair to their feet. In fact, the idea has become pretty mainstream in the past few years, with geeky collaborations from brands ranging from Vans to Rag and Bone to, yes, Christian Louboutin. But, even with those options, I still firmly believe that geeky custom shoes and their amazing artists are still the unsung heroes of nerdy fashion.

Yes: they’re going to cost a little more than, say, a pair of sneakers from ThinkGeek. Yes, you may have to give them a little extra TLC despite obsessively using weatherproof spray on them. So why in the world opt for a hand-painted piece rather than those easily mass-produced shoes?

I’m just gonna say it: I really love 90’s fashion. Now, the 90’s have made a small comeback in trends in these past few years, from tattoo chokers to track pants, but each time with an updated design that makes the piece appropriate for wear in 2018. But I love the original 90’s fashion. I love mom jeans with Doc Martens, brown lipstick, straight-cut overalls, and tartan mini skirts. Perhaps it’s partially nostalgia for the era I was born into, but I can guarantee you that I’m writing this with chocolate-colored lips and an oversized men’s flannel tied around my waist. Even as I revisited 90’s sitcoms as a slightly older child in the early 2000’s (you know, when I finally got the jokes), I still saw those girls on TV from a decade ago as the coolest damn girls I had ever seen. I admired them and their styles. I wanted to dress like Cher Horowitz and Ally McBeal, but most of all, I wanted to dress like Hillary Banks.

Hillary Banks was always such an unintentionally but lovably silly character. While much of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air would have you believe Hillary was there to be laughed at, I would argue that Hillary would make most of us laugh in an endearing way. She was naive, aloof, and just a tad self-absorbed, sure, but she was also hilarious and easy to love. And, of course, she was a total style icon and the ultimate 90’s fashionista. Here are some of my favorite throwbacks of Hillary’s looks:

Try and tell me the 13th Doctor’s style isn’t effortlessly perfect. I dare you.

The response to the 13th Doctor’s costume has been overwhelmingly positive since long before her season premiered. In fact, if you pick up a copy of The Sartorial Geek Magazine Issue 03, it features a great article all about her style. Feminine but practical and not losing that quirky Doctor charm, there really is a lot to love about her look. Her trenchcoat, her lace-up boots, her ethereally cool blue culottes, and who could forget the yellow suspenders? What’s not to love?

I’ll answer that for you: nothing, obviously. She is flawless and so is her outfit. So flawless, in fact, that I’m urging you all to take a page out of her style book at your earliest convenience. While suspenders and culottes might be a little harder for your average human to embrace, the current rainbow stripe trend will make it especially easy to embrace your inner doctor this fall.

I never want to be “that person”, but I have to say it: I was seriously let down by The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The campy, self-aware story of my favorite half-witch, Sabrina Spellman, traded in its tongue-in-cheek humor for something that takes itself far too seriously for what it is. (Not to mention the apparent confusion that witchcraft = Satanism. That’s just fake news.)

But, much to my annoyance, there is still something inherently likable about Sabrina. It isn’t the blatant sexualization of teenagers. It certainly isn’t the themes of modern-day Satanic Panic. Perhaps it has something to do with the ensemble of lovable foils, from Sabrina’s classically lovable Aunt Hilda to her newly-added cousin Ambrose. But, I think a huge part of Sabrina‘s charm comes from its gorgeous aesthetic. Obviously, the costumes are a huge part of that.

I could easily write an article for every character. But, allow me to start by dissecting the style of the iconic teenage witch that started it all.

I love Besamé Cosmetics. I have made that very clear in previous posts and I’m not ashamed to sound redundant. They check all of my boxes: No animal testing? Check. Nerdy collaborations? Check. Natural and responsible ingredients? Check. Every shade of red lipstick my little heart could ever desire? Check. Vintage-inspired to make me feel like a pinup queen when applying my makeup? Okay, not totally necessary for my makeup, but CHECK!

Agent Carter Passport Palette

It should come as no surprise to you that Besamé was one of my first (and only, honestly) stops at New York Comic Con a few weeks ago. Did I need more makeup? Well, no, but they were having the most amazing NYCC sale and I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t take advantage of it. For a seriously discounted price, I finally was able to pick up their Agent Carter Passport Shadow Palette.

American Horror Story certainly has had its ups and downs over the years. Some seasons were brilliant and smart and perfectly-written, while others fell short and underwhelmed me. Coven, the show’s third installment, was a season I had a love/hate relationship with. (i.e.: LOVE: Most of the concept. The fashion. Sarah Paulson. HATE: The fact that it seemed to take part in turning Wicca/witchcraft/paganism into something “trendy”. I’m not saying Ryan Murphy is entirely responsible for the Sephora “witch starter kit“, but I’m not NOT blaming him, either.) But there’s one thing I can’t deny: Misty Day, Lily Rabe’s powerful, eccentric, Stevie Knicks-loving witch, is a total style icon.

(Minor spoiler for American Horror Story: Apocalypse ahead)

Sartorial Geeks, can you believe it’s October already?

The leaves are changing, there’s a chill in the air… and there’s a sprinkle of magic overtaking all of the geek fashion this season! That’s right: it’s not just the time for Halloween and all things spooky. It’s also the perfect time to check out some of the coolest Disney-inspired lines that have dropped recently. Here are just a few of my faves!

Jordandené didn’t set out to be an all-girl team, but we certainly aren’t complaining about. We did, however, intend to be an option for the most Sartorial Geeks around. While you probably associate us most with promoting nerd culture, we also strive to send our customers messages of positivity and girl power apparel that they can wear whenever.

Looking to add to your feminist-themed closet? Need a daily reminder of what a total badass babe you are? Look no further: Jordandené has got you covered.

Whether you refer to her as Princess or General, the name Leia Organa instantly brings a lot of iconic costumes to mind. The Star Wars universe was certainly a game changer for futuristic sci-fi fashion. And she’d still be a game-changer years later, too– our favorite rebel princess would still influence Fashion Week runways decades later.

We’ll remember Leia for a lot of things: her bravery, her boldness, her strong will, and…

It’s officially autumn. It feels like just yesterday I was writing this same post about summer… and yet Haloween is in ten days! (Where did summer go?) But, at least the fall ’18 trends you’ll be seeing plenty of all season aren’t as bizarre as tiny sunglasses and clear PVC purses. In fact, most of them are very wearable (except maybe the enormous outerwear that was all over the F/W ’18 runways– what even is that?)

And the best part about a new season of trends? Finding new ways to add a nerdy flair to them! Here are some easy ways to put your geek chic twist on what’s in style this season!
