As a lover of both fashion and geekery, I often find myself dressing in keeping with the games I’ve been playing lately. This doesn’t necessarily mean dressing in cosplay as the characters, or even cosplay’s more subtle cousin, bounding (dressing in homage to characters within the confines of normal clothes). Nor does it necessitate wearing official merch for the game in question. Sometimes it just means a nod to an aesthetic or a colour scheme or using fashion to reflect the mood of the game.
I couldn’t imagine a more stylish opening entry for this series on fashion inspired by games than Sayonara Wild Hearts. I reviewed this game a while ago and I still find it influences my clothing choices. In this post, I will show you ways to style yourself after this game during the day, at the gym, and for a party.
Sayonara Wild Hearts is, in essence, an autoscrolling rhythm game. You run, ride, and race through a futuristic neon setting, trying to get as many points as possible. Aside from the addictive arcade mechanics, however, this is a game with emotional depth and beautiful artwork. The imagery from Tarot Cards and Anime makes this a geeky fashionista’s dream, and the colour palette of blues and purples looks incredible on everyone.
The following are just ideas for inspiration. I would love to see any creative looks you come up with inspired by this game! Tag me in a comment on Instagram or send me a private message.
Outfit 1: Daytime
I have this dress in black and can attest to its snuggliness. It’s fleece-lined, so perfect for those cold autumn/winter evenings. The tarot design on the pendant is a nod to the tarot card motif in the game, and the design on the boots represents the image of Death as an endgame boss. Finally, this top from our very own Jordandené subverts the classic romcom trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, just like Sayonara Wild Hearts subverts the traditional romance narrative.
Outfit 2: Gym
The excellent soundtrack to the game makes a perfect accompaniment to running, especially since a lot of the game involves chase scenes. Whatever your preferred form of exercise, or even if you just want to zone out watching Netflix, this outfit will keep you looking stylish throughout. The leggings and hair clip reflect the cosmic imagery that occurs throughout the game, whilst the top is a tribute to general geekiness. The shoes are sleek and futuristic, just like the environments you run through in each level.
Outfit 3: Party
No outfit post would be complete without a big statement number, and this sequined dress is certainly that. The opal earrings catch the light spectacularly and, fun fact for the science lovers, the stones are grown ethically in a lab! The boots echo the motorbike that plays a large part in the game, whilst also adding a punk rock flair to this otherwise refined ensemble.
