Shortly after we meet Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey fame, her style icon status is quickly solidified with a menswear-inspired riding outfit. Around the same time, she also disposes of the body of a man that she slept with. It took this, and only this, introduction for me to totally fall head over heels for her. What can I say? I always have a soft spot for the cold ones.
Despite being aloof and standoffish, Lady Mary Crawley is nothing short of the equivalent of an It Girl of her time. She is the epitome of sophistication, grace, and beauty, and her wardrobe is nothing short of any of those things.
The Human Embodiment of Elegance
Corsets and lace, pearls and fur, the most incredible collection of beaded and embroidered evening gowns… Lady Mary’s closet has it all and it’s probably worth more than your life savings times two. The fun thing about Downton Abbey, though, is that the time period makes it focus less on designers and brand names and more on the actual clothing. Of course, whatever Lady Mary was wearing was definitely the equivalent of being dressed head-to-toe in Balmain 24/7 today, but she can do it without the name drop.
Flapper Silhouettes
As the 20’s rolled in, the waistlines on dresses dropped and were adorned with more intricate beading. Always on-trend, Lady Mary obviously had the perfect beaded hair accessories to match as well.
Daytime Elegance
Dressing down for daytime? Never heard of her. Lady Mary’s day looks consist of gorgeous high-waisted skirts, silk blouses, and double-breasted coats. And hats. So many fabulous hats. To be honest, I totally want to take a page out of Lady Mary’s book and rock this entire outfit next spring.
The best kind of casual cosplay? I think so.
