Geek girl fashion is seemingly endless in this day and age. Whether you prefer shopping with small Etsy store or frequent major retailers like ModCloth and Hot Topic, there are options and they are almost everywhere. And these options are wonderful if you lean into the title of “geek girl”. But recently, it hit me that fashionable options that aren’t traditionally “feminine” are scarce. After all, the majority of my favorite (and the most popular) geek chic brands are known for their dresses, skirts, and women’s cut outwear. So, what does the fashionable geek boy wear? Or the androgynous geek girl? Or the non-binary geek that doesn’t use either of those titles? Why aren’t there more unisex geek chic fashion brands that extend past graphic tees?
I did a little research and was not surprised to find that options were scarce. While that’s a problem this community should certainly get on top of, I was able to find a few diamonds in the rough. So, if you’re in the market for geeky menswear/unisex fashion, consider checking out some of these spots:
Hero Within
Hero Within belongs at the top of this list because everything is so sleek and well-designed. If you’ve ever dreamed of wearing a stylish Batman-inspired blazer for your next formal event, this is the brand for you. They even offered a pair of jeans in their Justice League collection, which isn’t something you see often!
Our Universe by Her Universe
It was super exciting to see the biggest geek fashion brand out there offer unisex and men’s options when their Solo line debuted. Just like everything Her Universe puts out, the pieces range from cute, casual tees to more elaborate sweaters and jackets that can be used for cosplay and every day.
ThinkGeek
Don’t limit ThinkGeek to just being “that place where you can find an officially licensed tee for just about any fandom.” I was happy to find that they also offer a decent selection of button-up shirts, ties, outerwear, shoes, and even swimwear. I never knew how badly I wanted a Slytherin down jacket until now.
BoxLunch
Geeky polos, button-ups, flannels, and even jerseys! Take some time to seek out the hidden Punisher skulls in this checkered print shirt and tell me: what’s not to love?
Volante Design
If you’ve ever been to a major con, you’ve probably seen these guys. They make the absolute coolest “superhuman streetwear” I’ve ever seen. They aim to “make ordinary people feel extraordinary” and take inspiration from comic books, video games, movies and more to produce their incredible outerwear and accessories. Volante also create custom pieces if you’re willing to shell out twice the money!
