Unless every red carpet from now on serves looks as iconic as those that graced the purple carpet at the Black Panther premier, I don’t want to hear about it. The film’s Monday night premier called for “regal attire” fit for Wakandan royalty. Surprising nobody, everyone showed up and showed out.
And because of this, all other red carpets have been ruined for me.
Here are some of my favorites:
Chadwick Boseman
King T’Challah and Black Panther himself! Chadwick Boseman stood out in this Emporia Armani suit. Boseman always has a diplomatic air about him, but he proved to be especially regal in this black and gold printed silk jacket fit for a king.
Lupita Nyong’o
One could argue that Lupita Nyong’o rules every red carpet she walks down. But, she rendered me speechless with this look. She stunned in a custom Versace gown with a beautifully embellished caged harness made only for the fiercest and strongest of warrior women.
Daniel Kaluuya
Kaluuya took his royal attire to the next level by rocking a traditional Ugandan kanzu. While seen as a multi-purpose garment today, the kanzu is traditionally used as formalwear for customary weddings, burials, and other functions. It paired nicely with his oxblood velvet blazer by Burberry for a look worthy of African royalty.
Issa Rae
I loved Issa Rae’s look. So. Much. Rosie Assoulin made her a radiant and graceful and playful dress. I mean, look at that amazing pop of metallic color!
Angela Basset
Actual Queen Angela Basset’s gorgeous yellow jumpsuit by Naeem Khan stood out in the best way possible. (Think Beyoncé’s Lemonade dress, but brighter and with tassels.) Gorgeously bold with an authentic feel and amazing movement, Basset’s stylist pulled references from the tribal women of Nigeria, Ethiopia, and India for this amazing outfit. (By the way, those earrings you can’t stop looking at? Available for sale by the designer and renamed for the actress.)
