The world of fantasy book fandoms has had to shift over the last couple of years. One particular fandom, which “shall-not-be-named,” is now tainted with the comments made by the creator. I personally have felt like I’ve lost a huge chunk of my life without being able to celebrate the fandom that I had cherished for many years. To fill this “magical void,” I have been hunting for other fantasy, and science fiction, fandoms to support instead. Here is my list:

5 Fantasy and Sci-Fi Fandoms to Fill the Magical Void

Grishaverse:

The Grishaverse is a series of books written by Leigh Bardugo. This series follows various characters with magical powers. The book world currently has nine books (three different series and two short story collections). Last year, a Netflix series debuted, which combines the characters in two of the series. The Grishaverse is one of my favourite fictional worlds!

The Witcher:

The Witcher is a series of books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, a Netflix series, and a video game. This series is about a monster hunter. I’ve read one of the books so far, and I enjoyed it. I’m planning on reading more of the books before watching the show, but I’ve seen great reviews of it. Since there are books, a show, and many video games, there are countless hours of entertainment in this fictional world.

Shadowhunters:

The Shadowhunter series was created by author Cassandra Clare. Shadowhunters are human-angels who hunt demons. There are currently sixteen books in this series, with more on the way. These books are divided into different series that take place in the present day or in the last two hundred years, but they follow the same families. As well as many books to read, there is also a Shadowhunters movie and Netflix series. The Shadowhunters world can keep you busy with lots of entertainment options.

Stranger Things:

Stranger Things is a science fiction Netflix series set during the 1980s. The kids in this series must battle creatures in a creepy parallel world called “The Upside Down.” There are currently three seasons to watch, with another one on the way. As well as the show, there are novels and graphic novels that are part of the series. I’m currently reading them, and I’m loving them so far. These books are a great extension of the sci-fi world of Stranger Things.

Doctor Who:

Doctor Who is one of my favorite TV shows. Doctor Who is about an alien man who travels throughout time and space. There are also many novels and graphic novels that are constantly being published. The books usually feature storylines that don’t appear on screen, so they are not spoiled by watching the TV show. This show isn’t put out as consistently as others, but it’s still an entertaining fandom to join.

Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire:

A Song of Ice and Fire is a book series by George R. R. Martin that was adapted into the TV show Game of Thrones. This series is about a battle throughout the world, called Westeros, for the throne. The books are epic fantasy novels, which are longer than an average book. There are also some prequel novels set within the same world. The TV series Game of Thrones has eight seasons, and there is a prequel series that is releasing later this year. Though some parts of this series are problematic, particularly the treatment of women, it is an entertaining fantasy series.

Have you checked out any of these series? Which is your favorite?
