One of my favorite things about running this blog is that it’s part of my job to know when cool nerdy things are happening. One of those cool nerdy thing? The Kickstarter campaign for Wash Day.
When something pops up in my newsfeed more than three times, I have to take notice. The day Wash Day‘s Kickstarter campaign launched, I saw it everywhere.
Wash Day is a slice-of-life comic that pays tribute to the beauty and endurance of Black women and their hair. Written by Jamila Rowser and illustrated by Robyn Smith, Wash Day tells the story Kimana, a 26-year-old woman living in the Bronx, as she cares for her long, thick hair. As Kim goes through her Sunday morning rituals, we see the highs and lows of her day. Fresh coffee. Rising rent. Girl talk. Catcalls.
Jamila, inspired by her own wash day ritual and desire to read more comics by and for women of color, decided to follow the words of the great Toni Morrison. “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”
The Kickstarter was fully funded within the first 48 hours. But you still have a chance to pick up some really cool rewards and unlock the stretch goal of printed, Spanish-translated copies of the comic.
