Manic Pixie Scream Girl

This episode is sponsored by Jordandene and Logan Arch.

Jordandene’s latest collection, The Fangirl Galaxy Collection, is a collaboration with best-selling author Sam Maggs. My little fangirl heart exploded at the chance to chat with Sam while she was in New York. (Appropriately, to celebrate her upcoming book, Girl Squads, at Book Expo and BookCon.)

Sam Maggs Fangirl Galaxy Collection

If you haven’t heard of Sam Maggs, please let me introduce you. Sam is a freelance writer who is currently working on some comic books for IDW (Star Trek and Jem and the Holograms). She also writes video games at Bioware and is working on a game called Anthem, which comes out early next year. Sam might be best known for her books The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy and Wonder Women. (Which you may have seen in Issue One of The Sartorial Geek Magazine). She’s basically writing all the cool things all over the place.

The underlying theme of Sam’s work is awesome women, which is apparent in everything she does. I cannot more highly recommend following her everywhere @sammaggs and saying hello to her at a con or book signing if you have a chance!

You should also check out our brand new collection with her. There’s something for the fake geek girl in everyone.

When you start a podcast because you have the equipment.

This week I’m so excited to chat with fellow podcasters: Kyle, Claire, and James from Dragons, Sexy Robots, and Adventures.

If you haven’t listened to DSRA, they cover all kinds of nerdy things (books, movies, TV shows, comics, video games, everything). DSRA digs into the stories behind what’s happening in pop culture. Every new story has an older one behind it, and this podcast is the place to hear about it.

The life of a cinematographer

This episode of The Sartorial Geek Podcast is sponsored by Jordandene and Logan Arch.

Caitlin Machak is a fellow nerd who I bonded with immediately over our mutual love of Harry Potter, My Favorite Murder, and good movies. Our circles overlap so much, and I’m excited to see how those connections keep growing!

I truly love talking to people who know everything about things I know very little about. Caitlin knows SO much about film in every sense. She’s worked on projects in basically every area: theater, TV, movies, web, and some commercials.

This episode will give you tons of behind the scenes knowledge about how cameras work, what it’s actually like on set, and so many recommendations for movies and TV shows you should check out.

You should also definitely check out Gerald, Full of Wonder (listen to the episode to figure out what we’re talking about!).

If you’re interested in leveling up your health and wellness with Robyn/Geek Girl Strong and you don’t live in NYC, she has online options as well!

Being fit and being a nerd has not always appeared to align. We’ve all seen the movies where the nerdy kid with big glasses sits on the bleachers during P.E. class or gets picked last or gets hit right in the face during every dodgeball game. Thankfully, we’re moving past those stereotypes, and Robyn is here to help.

Robyn’s tip for taking the first step into leveling up your health: walk more!

Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Get off one subway stop earlier, Park a little farther away. Some creative ways to get more walking in are also to go on a walking date, walk during phone calls, try out a walking meeting, or take a coffee date to go to get some extra steps in.

Another leveling-up tip is to try to eat a vegetable with every meal. If you can, choose one that isn’t full of water (that would cook down into nothing if you put it over heat). Hearty veggies mean more energy!

Two big tips for being healthier during conventions? 1. Set a reminder on your phone to drink more water. 2. Try to eat a real breakfast in the morning.

One of my favorite ways Robyn combines geekiness with physical activity is Twitch workouts! (For examples, check out #TwitchWorkout on Instagram.) It works kind of like a drinking game: pick a twitch stream to watch, set rules for yourself, and play along either on your own or with a friend or partner. You’ll get your gaming time in while also burning calories!
