I picked up this book ages after reading Furyborn (also by Claire Legrand). I had read that it was kind of a monster story, but mostly about strong young women, and I was very much into that. So it was right at the top of my TBR when I bought it, and I’m so glad I read it.

Sawkill Girls follows three young women; Marion, Zoey, and Val. Marion is new to Sawkill Rock. She, her sister, and mother moved there shortly after her father’s death. Zoey has lived on Sawkill for a bit, and is the kid everyone makes fun of at school. Her best friend Thora disappeared awhile back, and she suspects Val. Val is the most popular girl on Sawkill. Her family is crazy rich, she throws insane parties, and everything is about her. Also, she has a secret.

There is a legend about a creature known as the Collector. The Collector is a monster from another world who kills people, girls specifically. The Collector feeds on them, drawing strength until he can leave his host, and kill everyone he wants. We find out that the Collector is more than just a legend.

This book was equal parts fantasy and horror, and I loved every minute of it. Legrand has a phenomenal knack for writing romance in unexpected places (I will forever refer to Furyborn as “surprisingly sexy”). There is some sexiness in Sawkill Girls as well, but there is a lot more focus on legend, gore, and the power of women.

I highly recommend this book. I think it’s a beautiful story, and it really exemplifies its tagline; “turn fear into power.” Anyone who enjoys YA and a bit of horror needs to pick this up.

Have you read Sawkill Girls? What did you think?
