In case you missed it, the Sartorial Geek and WORD bookstore have teamed up to bring you monthly happy hour meetups where you can let your geek flag fly. Once a month, you can join us IRL at WORD’s Brooklyn location for drinks, games, and the best way to connect with other proud geeks in our community. July’s event was to celebrate reading in all forms, be it comics, zines, or novels. And, of course: our very own book club.
Last month, The Sartorial Geek officially launched its online book club, and our first read was an obvious choice: Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher. While our book club hosts discussions online, book club events are the perfect place for members to meet and chat about the read in person. Plus, it gave everyone the opportunity to shop the book of choice for July: Misfit City by Kurt Lustgarten!
Also, we’re your book matchmakers now.
Attendees had the opportunity to fill out our new book recommendation questionnaire. With questions about their favorite genres, childhood books, and personal preferences, everyone who completed one received personalized book recommendations straight to their inboxes.
As always, we could count on our friends at The Kindred Spirit Podcast to provide us with another delicious, specialty cocktail. This time around, it was The Portrait of a Pink Lady, named after the renowned Henry James novel. The recipe comes from Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle and consists of gin, pink lemonade, grenadine, and club soda. Spoiler alert: it’s as delicious as it is dangerous.
And of course, what better way to end our book club happy hour than with a game of literary Heads Up? Everyone was assigned a nametag with a book, author, or fictional character and was given turns to ask yes-or-no questions in order to figure out who or what they had. (You may also know this is the “Diversity Day” game from The Office. Some of us were much better than others… and I was not one of them.)
The best part of hanging out with us at our happy hour events? We never let you leave empty-handed! Everyone was able to take home a copy of Fangirls Rule The World, an intro to the best geek girl reads from Quirk Books, plus a Jordandené Bookworm sticker and hand-lettered bookmark.
