You may recognize Ashley Warren from a few places. If you’ve been to any of our Sartorial Geek events, she’s the person making sure everything runs smoothly and actually happens. You may also know her from her podcast, The Kindred Spirit Podcast. Or, if you hang around sartorialgeek.com, you’ve probably seen Ashley’s column “Podcast Sommelier,” where she combines a podcast with a cocktail.

Who listens to podcasts? When do you listen? What are your favorite genres?

Ashley is known as the podcast expert in our group of friends, and we always go to her for new podcast recommendations. Three of her top recommendations for new listeners are:

  1. Serial
  2. Reply All
  3. Criminal

Ashley finds a lot of new podcasts from looking at roundup lists and googling podcasts similar to ones she already loves. It’s also really common to hear a cool guest on one podcast, start following them, and see if they have their own podcast or which other shows they’ve been a guest on.

John Hodgman shared really great advice for starting to listen to new podcasts. Listen to the most recent episode, which both helps with their advertising stats and also helps you see where the show is heading. Then, if you like it, you can head back to the beginning and go through the archives. I’ve been using this advice since Ashley first told me about it, and it really works!

Ashley’s current favorite podcasts are:

  1. The Dollop
  2. Thirst Aid Kit
  3. Bit by a Fox Podcast
  4. This Podcast Will Kill you

What’s your favorite podcast? Let us know – we’re always looking for new recommendations!
