Welcome back to a special edition of the Podcast Sommelier! I’m Ashley, and I usually talk about the history of cocktails on my podcast The Kindred Spirit, which is available on the podcast app of your choice. But this evening I will be recommending a podcast and cocktail for you to enjoy. If you do make this cocktail or drink any cocktails, post a photo with the hashtag #KindredSips for a chance to be featured on our Instagram or Twitter.
Those who know me might say that I’m a little true-crime obsessed. I’ve listened to your Serials, Casefiles, Someone Knows Something, Last Podcast on the Left, etc. But the podcast that started me down the true crime rabbit hole is My Favorite Murder!
Look & Listen, because shit is about to get real.
For those of you who don’t know, My Favorite Murder is a true crime podcast hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, which posts weekly on Thursdays. In each episode, Georgia and Karen spend a few minutes talking about their lives before they take turns telling the story of a murder that they have researched. There is always a lot of banter and commentary on each other’s stories so it never gets too dark. Also they care about the victims, which is always refreshing.
Recently they have started releasing minisodes on Mondays, which are around thirty minutes long. The minisodes mainly feature stories about hometown murders, ghosts, sinkholes or EMT/First Responder stories. But they are always submitted by the listener, which Karen and Georgia then read and comment on. It’s a nice break from the longer episodes and a great way to start the week off!
There are over a hundred episodes of My Favorite Murder so I decided to recommend an early episode – 23: “Making a Twenty-Thirder”.
This episode marks the appearance of one Mr. Steven Ray Morris. Steven Ray Morris is responsible for editing and producing the podcast as well as being a research assistant and an all around great guy. He also has two podcasts of his own: See Jurassic Right and, my personal favorite, The Purrrcast.
This was one of their last themed episodes. In the early days of the podcast, each episode had a theme like 1800’s murders or what have you. Now they just research what they want to. The theme of this episode is “I Survived” so, spoiler, no one dies. Yay!
Georgia tells the story of Alexander Pichushkin, the Chessboard Killer and Karen tells the story from her favorite show I Survived.
This is also when Karen gives the three steps to staying safe: “1. Just get a job 2. Buy your own shit. 3. Stay out of the forest.” This is my absolute favorite quote! I have been telling people for years to stay out of the forest. You are either going to find a dead body, disposing of a dead body OR you are the dead body.
I like this episode because it introduces you to both of their personalities and their friendship. Since it’s a survival episode it is really just them being like, “Women are amazing. They are survivors. They stayed sexy and did not get murdered!” This is what My Favorite Murder at its core represents: female empowerment and the ability to overcome the obstacles in our way. We have been victimized enough it’s time to let the ladies tell their stories. It’s time to sit crooked and have a drink.
Today’s drink is a Pepper Spray First, Apologize Later. Your new favorite brunch drink!
- 1 ½ parts Absolut Peppar
- 2 ½ parts Tomato Juice
- Squeeze a Lemon slice
- Squeeze a Lime slice
- 2 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
- 3 dashes Hot Sauce (you do you, if you want more put it in there)
- 1 pinch Ground Black pepper
- 1 pinch Salt
Directions
- Take one of the lemon slices and rub into around the rim of your glass, then roll your lemon-y glass in some pepper. I used a lemon pepper blend
- Add all your ingredients into a glass….we don’t have time to be fancy. Just chuck everything in there.
- Give it a quick stir
- Garnish with a slice of lime and a stick of celery
I’m a traditionalist. If you listened to the Kindred Spirit Pimm’s Cup episode, you know that my thoughts on garnish is that less is more. But I accept everyone’s taste so go crazy! Feel free to add in some bacon or maybe some cocktail onions for Mr. Paul Onions. Make it your cocktail! Put in what you like! Claudia, my cohost, will probably add some rosemary or thyme and maybe other plants; perhaps a forest. This is a judgment-free zone, so add your plants!
Thanks for joining me, and we’ll see you on the second Saturday of next month for another edition of the Podcast Sommelier.
If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out Jordandené’s new MFM-inspired shirt, on sale now! And be sure to stay sexy and don’t get murdered. Byeeeee!
