I’ve got a bit of a confession to make: Marvel is one of those fandoms that I haven’t been able to get into.

I know, it’s weird. Based on the “everything” about me, you’d think I’d be all over this sector of nerdiness. In reality, any time superheroes are mentioned I turn into that meme of Michael Scott dressed as Dr. Strange. You know the one.

I’ve seen a good number of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The visual effects are mind-blowing, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching my favorite actors join the super-phenomenon (hey, Benedict!). And characters like Loki are often recommended to me, as they fit right in with my repertoire of existing fictional favorites.

Even so, my interest in superheroes has remained largely surface level. I’ve mostly considered comic book movies a vehicle for consuming movie theater popcorn and understanding pop-culture references . . . until now.

Then, this happened.

Hello Wanda, darling

Enter: WandaVision, the story of Wanda Maximoff’s grief taking the form of a universe-bending “fix-it fanfic” influenced by the sitcoms of years-past. Its format was fresh, and it referenced some of my favorite vintage TV shows. In the age of quarantine where new content is few and far between, of course I was going to watch it.

What I didn’t expect was to fall head-over-heels in love with this show. The costumes, the theme songs, and effects resurrected from the golden age of television were executed to perfection. The weekly “please stand by” message soon became my own personal villain origin story.

And much to my surprise, I started to care about superheroes.

Me!

Someone who has notoriously felt apathetic towards this franchise!

In fact, I’ve enjoyed WandaVision so much that I created a playlist for it. A story of love and loss spanning distances of time and space was just begging for a themed mix of songs, and you can find a link to listen below.

While I’ve still got a ways to go before dubbing myself a Marvel super-fan, it’s been fun to dip my toes in the water of this new-to-me geek genre. For the first time I’m considering watching Marvel films that I haven’t seen before, and I think I might even have a favorite Avenger now. It’s both exciting and unprecedented!
