Dr. Kathleen Smith is a licensed therapist and author of the book Everything Isn’t Terrible: Conquer Your Insecurities, Interrupt Your Anxiety, and Finally Calm Down. If there’s any book worth reading right now, I highly recommend this one. She explores different situations and how to manage your anxiety through them, which makes this a great choice to re-read through different points of your life or to gift to a friend.

The plot of Over Sea, Under Stone revolves around fighting that darkness. Set in Wales, siblings Simon, Jane, and Barney must find the Holy Grail hidden by one of King Arthur’s knights. A little Disney-esque at times, the bad guys are predictably bad. Good and evil are largely felt within the hearts of the three main characters. Yet, there is a truth to that sort of simplified understanding of the universe. We know in our gut when something isn’t quite right. And we often find that we get in the most trouble when we ignore our deepest instincts.

So, I freaking loved Knives out. It truly felt like it was made just for me: a whodunnit murder mystery, directed by one of my faves, starring Chris Evans. If you took everything that holds a special place in my heart and carefully placed it in one film, this is what you would get. When I realized that I know someone who was in the movie, I lost my dang mind.

Confession: when I was a teen Little Women’s title made me cringe. It made me wince, clench my jaw, and even grind my teeth a little. Something about it was so…diminutive. Little Women? It felt demeaning, and a little insulting even. As if these women, whoever they were, were shrunk down and jammed unceremoniously into a dollhouse. Like they were nothing more than teeny tiny little trinkets to be tossed about, played with, and then promptly forgotten about.

I caught the COVID in the “early” wave in my area: lucky me. And I’ll be quick with a note of how it’s really not something to take lightly: I am (statistically-speaking) young and in decent health, and I’ve still been knocked down for the count—even if I wasn’t required to stay in isolation because I’m contagious, I definitely couldn’t have gone to work or even left the house (and honestly: still don’t feel well enough now, almost two weeks later). So, yes. Be safe, for yourself and for others.

I don’t know about other geeks, but my favorite thing to do when I’m sad is binge a stand-up comedy special on Netflix. In case you’re like me and are always looking for new recommendations while you self-isolate, here’s a list of my go-tos (with some newer additions!) All of these are available on Netflix unless otherwise specified.

Winter 2020’s stand-out anime is, without a doubt, Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! The manga-turned-anime traces a trio of high school girls as they set out to become anime creators. But since one is forbidden from joining the anime club, they form the “Eizouken” (video research club). There, the trio learn about teamwork, visual storytelling, and working to deadlines.

As a glasses wearer and a makeup lover, I sometimes find it difficult to make the two work for me. Either you can’t see my awesome nerdy makeup behind my glasses, or I find mascara smudges all over said glasses instead. I still wear contacts a lot of the time if I’m going for a really dramatic eye or a cosplay look, but I’ve definitely learned some tips and tricks to help make my makeup pop (and also keep it off my glasses).
