We’re on Week 2 of the Sartorial Geek Fashion Fix: Summer Challenge, and the prompt is Magical Menagerie, encompassing your favorite animal & animal-symbol characters. Since Disney’s live action The Lion King is out later this month, I’m Disneybounding a character from the classic animated film.

Villains often have the best style and although he’s an animated lion, Scar is no exception. His color palette is distinct from all the other lions, he has a slinky British accent, and one powerhouse villain song. What’s not to love? As geek fashion inspo, Scar makes me think natural textures and darker colors.
The Lion’s Share
Confession: I’m a Leo, so I felt obligated to put together a Lion King outfit in honor of my sign. I also liked the challenge of Disneybounding a non-humanoid character. It requires a bit more creativity when the character doesn’t wear clothes. With Scar, the most obvious thing that distinguishes him from the other lions is his coloration. So I started there.

Scar’s coat is a dark orange-y brown, and his mane is black. I already have an advantage with the latter as my own mane is naturally black, but I added a black headband to emphasize that. It also recalls the slicked back tuft in Scar’s mane. I wore a dress that’s a terracotta orange similar to Scar’s coat color. For a simple Disneybound, I could’ve stopped here, but I like to go a step further.
Since it’s animals week, I wanted to use textured pieces like faux leather and fur. My dress being suede already fit into this theme. A fur-lined black vest was the perfect extra touch for amping up the leonine feel. Bonus that it was already in my closet – just like my dress!
Be Prepared: Closet Geek Fashion
If you follow me on Instagram (@akangaru), you’ve seen my Nala-inspired outfit, which was the first I styled for The Lion King. I hadn’t planned to do another. Then, I rediscovered this suede dress and vest in my closet and felt compelled to Disneybound Scar. The outfit was right there! That’s one of the great things about Disneybounding: it encourages you to look at regular clothes and be creatively geeky about it!

Also from my closet (or rather my sister’s), these pointed black boots. You may recognize them from one of the Dark Side outfits I wrote about last month! I wore them again as a nod to Scar’s black claws. Have you noticed in the original Lion King movie, Scar is the only lion to have claws showing?

My finishing touches were with my make-up. I love how bright green Scar’s eyes are, and if I had been able to find my green eyeliner, that’s what I would’ve used! That said, I went with electric blue for a similar pop of color and to contrast with my dark lip. For a night-time look, I suggest a smoky eye. I haven’t talked much about the make-up aspect in my outfit posts so far, but that’s another area with geek fashion possibilities. If you aren’t an accessories person, you can do a lot to convey character with make-up instead.

This is my main outfit for this week’s theme, but check out my Instagram for a few other feline-themed outfits. I’m also sharing my favorite outfits from #sgfashionfix participants in my IG Stories! Hope you’re enjoying our first geek fashion challenge! I love everyone’s different styles.
