I never really got into Buffy The Vampire Slayer, so you can imagine how surprised I was to find out that there’s one topic the fandom is really divided on: Willow’s wardrobe. In fact, Willow Rosenberg herself seems to be divided at times, too:

There’s an entire blog dedicated to what the author calls her “ugly” outfits. I’ve come across several Buzzfeed articles ranking her sweaters, some harsher than others. But there’s also a blog dedicated to praising her style, asking What Would Willow Wear?, and dozens of Pinterest boards and forgotten Polyvore sets on how to get the Willow Rosenberg Look.

So, love it or hate it, Willow has certainly carved her own spot in the world of fictional fashion. Fictional style icons are nothing if not memorable. Let’s take a look at what makes her just that.

So 90’s It Hurts

Style Icon: Willow Rosenberg

Perhaps it’s easy to be critical of Willow’s style when revisiting a series decades later. Would a full-on Willow outfit look silly in 2018? Probably. But, in the 90’s, she blended in just fine with her overalls, pigtails, and florals. Also, 90’s fashion is making a comeback anyway, so perhaps we’ll all be dressed like her in a few months.

Mini Skirts Galore

More often than not, you could catch Willow in a mini skirt and tights, which is a much cuter and more flattering look than her collection of shapeless overalls. It’s a very schoolgirl-chic combo, which you can’t deny is the perfect style for the shy, bookish girl she is.

The Neverending Sweaters

If there’s one thing Willow Rosenberg was known for, it was her collection of oversized sweaters. Striped, fuzzy, graphic, bulky– she owned them all. Yes, some were… not so great, but some– like the rainbow striped one pictured above– were so cute I’d still wear them today. They were her signature thing. If the shot was missing a sweater, it was probably missing Willow, too.
