If you’ve been hanging out on The Sartorial Geek blog or reading our magazine, the name Kara Dennison might sound familiar to you. She’s one of our favorite blog contributors. Kara wrote an article about gatekeeping called “Fandom is Fandom” in issue two of our magazine.

Kara, Liz, and I all love Doctor Who. We come from different places in the Doctor Who fandom. Kara has interviewed the Doctor himself. Doctor Who is Liz’s favorite show… And I’m a super casual fan. And guess what? We can still have a great conversation about our mutual love of the show, even though we’re all at different “levels” of fandom. Isn’t that incredible!

It’s hard to exist in the nerdiverse without encountering gatekeeping. But, we really hope that changes. Fans should be able to be fans of whatever they want, at whatever level they want, without having to explain or defend themselves to anyone. And what’s amazing about fans not all being the same is that, by talking to other people who love what you love but in a different way, you can learn even more about what makes your favorite thing amazing!

If you enjoy this conversation, please check out Kara’s articles on our blog, in our magazine, and on her site: www.karadennison.com.

You should also check out the Hybrid zine she mentioned and the Black Archive.
