I am not a beauty guru, and regrettably, I do not have all the disposable income on the planet. Together, those pieces make it difficult for me to get every single makeup collection that I want. Sure, I’d love to get PR, but I’m far from being able to do that.

What I’m trying to say, is that I didn’t get ColourPop’s Sailor Moon Collection.

When I saw that it was coming (thanks to my makeup savvy friend, Ashley), I lost my dang mind. But I have a million palettes right now, and I’ve only hit 2 pans so far this year (you can learn more about my feelings on Project Panning here).

The last thing my broke booty needs is to spend money on another palette that will end up collecting more dust than my giant stack of books. So I figured, let’s try to dupe it!

“Duping” is a shortened word for duplicating: the goal is to duplicate makeup that is inaccessible. While ColourPop is an extremely accessible brand price-wise, their collections are so incredible that they tend to sell out quickly. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, other than the fact that I can’t necessarily buy things at my leisure. So when Ashley sent me the photos of swatches from the Sailor Moon collection I got to work.

I knew that my best bet would be the Zodiac palette from BH Cosmetics; it has some similar tones, incredible shimmers, and some all-around great shades. While I was right in finding some winners there, I needed to use most of my palettes to fully get the Sailor Moon palette’s vibe.

Below is a list of my dupes. The original Sailor Moon color, the dupe name, the dupe palette, its cosmetics company, and after that, swatches!

  • Silver Crystal: Gemini Metallic – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Luna: Cancer Metallic – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Justice: Double Scoop – Mini Breaker (Jeffree Star Cosmetics)
  • Tuxedo Rose: Virgo Matte – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Love: Bubblegum – Mini Breaker (Jeffree Star Cosmetics)
  • Miracle Romance: Foreplay – Mini Breaker (Jeffree Star Cosmetics)
  • Silver Millennium: Play it Cool – Mint to Be (ColourPop)
  • Shining Moon: Elemental – Relic Palette (Lunatick)
  • Twilight Flash: Aquarius Matte – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Full Moon: Pisces Metallic – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Mare Serenitatis: Taurus Metallic – Zodiac Palette (BH Cosmetics)
  • Moon Castle: Pageantry – FTW Palette (Kesha Rose Beauty by HipDot)

I absolutely adore ColourPop. Their products, prices, and Twitter account are all incredible. But sometimes I just can’t justify new makeup (or refreshing a page for 10 minutes in the middle of a workday).

I’m glad that I could find similar shades within my current collection, and I hope that you consider doing the same before purchasing your next palette. Or at least, remember to check out your current collection when you miss a limited edition drop like this. I don’t have the absolutely adorable packaging, but I have some pretty similar shades already!
