Dapper Day Fall 2019 at Disneyland, CA was the first weekend of November. It was also the first time one at the parks could include Galaxy’s Edge since that land opened after Spring Dapper Day had already taken place. Naturally, my sister and I decided to participate for the first time because Star Wars. With one month left before the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, it felt like a nice way to kick off our celebration of the series.
So what is Dapper Day? From the Dapper Day website:
Definition: dap·per
Adjective: neat and trim in appearance; very spruce and stylishDAPPER DAY celebrates fun, refined style from yesterday and today.
While a lot of Dapper Day styles favor vintage looks, there is always a range of fancy dress you can see at the parks. This was helpful for my sister and I because our personal styles aren’t very vintage. We focused on these two aspects instead: nice clothes we already own and Star Wars Disneybound.
Shop your Closet
We literally made the decision to join the geek fashion festivities the night before. So we surveyed our closets to see what our options were. First, we looked at clothes in classic Star Wars color schemes – a lot of neutrals and some deep blues and reds. Then, we looked at pieces that would be considered dapper —dresses, jumpsuits, cardigans, etc. — and narrowed things down from there.
Our fancier pieces that still felt Star Wars-y turned out to be mostly jumpsuits. That worked for us because it simplified our outfits, and we liked the touch of vintage they bring to any look. It was also a quick way to set down a base color to build from.
Choose a Character
My outfit was easy because I own a long cardigan from Elhoffer Design based on General Leia Organa’s luxurious cloak in The Last Jedi.
With the cardigan doing most of the work, I wore a black jumpsuit underneath. Leia wears a dark dress under her cloak, so the wide, flowy legs on the jumpsuit helped give my outfit the illusion of a dress. I fancied up everything with bold jewelry and mimicked Leia’s hairstyle. Much was made of “space jewelry” in TLJ, so it seemed fitting to add bling.
My sister did an interpretation of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since her jumpsuit was khaki-colored, Disneybounding a Jedi made sense. Normally, the easiest way to get a Jedi look is through layered clothes, but it’s still too warm in California for that to be comfortable. My sister also had to make sure the look was dapper.
Her solution? Put a vintage varsity cardigan over the jumpsuit and hello there, Professor Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The monochromatic palette and dark accents is reminiscent of Obi-Wan’s costume, which is a mix of beige layers with brown accents, but the sleeker lines make the look more refined. We added the Rey belt I’d previously picked up at Black Spire Outfitters to really give this a more Jedi feel. Brown heeled boots finished off the outfit. Cat brought her lightsaber and her signature accessory – sunglasses.
Dapper Star Wars Style
And that’s our first attempt at participating in Dapper Day at Disneyland but with a Star Wars twist. How did we do? The best thing about wandering Black Spire on Dapper Day was seeing the range of intergalactic fashion creativity.
Have you participated in Dapper Day? If so, do you gravitate towards Disneybounding or do you just wear your Sunday Best?
