Casual cosplay (or ‘closet cosplay’ as some call it) is a wonderful thing for many reasons. It can help a newbie cosplayer get their feet wet before they make the commitment to full-on cosplay, which can make things much less underwhelming. But it can also give the rest of us an easy way to embrace out fandom 365 days of the year, experts and novices alike.
Casual cosplay usually involves stylish, everyday outfits that you can easily pull from your own closet. This can mean dressing up as a character that keeps it casual or dressing down an elaborate costume in a creative way. Regardless of your reason and how you choose to go about it, this is a super fun way to take your geek chic dressing to the next level. (Plus, it gives your Jordandené tees another purpose. Score.)
Here’s some inspiration to help you put together your very own casual cosplay!
Belle, Beauty and the Beast
This was such an easy first choice. The perfect Disneybounding option? Check. Adorable enough to wear everywhere and anywhere? Easy enough to pull together for a last-minute cosplay? Check, check, and check. Plus, I think that book purse is a must for any Belle cosplayer, casual or not. Props that can function as something useful are a must.
Dustin Henderson, Stranger Things
The best thing about Dustin’s go-to look? It consists of things a lot of people already have in their closet. Casual cosplay is all about convenience it not? In fact, this looks so easy and comfy, I just might have to try it out at my next con. We all know walking through huge convention centers call for comfy shoes and the layers are perfect for when vendor room temperatures drop below freezing.
Frank Castle, The Punisher
I was going to say that this was easy to put together because I dressed like this every day as a teenager, but… I still do. (Maybe not every day, but it’s certainly my go-to fall/winter look.) There is so much to love about a casual Punisher cosplay and it has everything to do with the fact that you will always, always, come out looking like a total badass.
