Last week, we interviewed Ann Shen about her creative journey and new book Legendary Ladies. This week we’re back with some of Ann’s artist recommendations!

ARTIST RECOMMENDATIONS

Streaming Binge:

“I love the new Queer Eye on Netflix. Such a feel good. And then I follow the guys on Instagram now and they’re my new life inspo. Life inspo, fit inspo, everything spo!”

Movie:

“I loved Black Panther. I know this is not going to be a new recommendation but I really loved it.”

Podcast:

“My Favorite Murder. I can’t. I do listen to other stuff; I also like Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations when I’m feeling more thoughtful. But MFM is always on for me.”

Book:

“I just read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and it’s REALLY good. It’s a fiction book and it’s about a woman who’s a famous movie star who had seven husbands and that’s all I’ll say. It’s really well-written. I haven’t read aArtist Recommendations: Ann Shen book in a long time that made me lie awake thinking about it after I finished.”

Comic:

“I’m really into the Batgirl series that Babs Tarr, Cameron Stewart, and Brendan Fletcher worked on.”

Song:

“Oh my god I love “All the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack. Kendrick Lamar and SZA. I get very into one thing! I learn everything about it, I love it, it’s my whole life for two months, and then I forget about it completely and move onto something else. But yeah I love that song right now – right now that’s my get up and get ready song.”

Beauty Product:

“Oh my gosh so many, beauty products are my hobby. I’m really big on skincare, and my favorites right now are the CosRX Low-PH Good Morning Cleanser and the Missha Time Revolution First Treatment Essence. I’m transitioning my beauty products over to natural ones slowly, and first up I got a foundation I really like by 100% Pure – Fruit Pigmented 2nd Skin Foundation. Another natural beauty rec – I really like Rituel de Fille’s lipsticks – they’re richly pigmented and matte (and just a touch of witchy, which is right up my alley).”

Artist:

“Gosh there’s so many. I look at a lot then I don’t at the same time because sometimes I get so…they all start to look the same or it’s too much or I’m afraid I’m gonna like. Something’s going to plant in my brain and I’m going to think I thought of it but it’s actually someone else’s so I try not to look at too many people who work in what I do. I try to look at fine art or photography. There’s actually a photographer I really love.

Her name is Jamie Beck but she’s @AnnStreetStudio on Instagram. I love her right now just as an image-maker. Her photography – she’s in France right now. Like oh my god you’re doing it for the art of it again composing still-lifes doing these really beautiful photographs that look like Dutch master paintings. And I love that because I love that they’re all full of symbolism and I’m trying to introduce that more into my work. I did it with Legendary Ladies and I want to do it even more. As I move forward I want my work to be more interesting and layered and symbolic – starting to layer in more meaning because that seems interesting to me. More story and all the objects. Getting more sophisticated in that.”
