Kylo Ren
Background
Although the relationship between the First Order and the Empire isn’t made very clear, the two together seem to represent the cyclical nature of evil in the Star Wars universe. Although both these organizations have prominently placed Force users, they rely almost entirely on numbers and weaponry for their strength, showing them to be alienated from the natural and spiritual worlds.
Color Story
Black
In Western culture, darkness has long been associated with evil and death. But it also came to symbolize power in certain contexts. Before the invention of synthetic dyes, a large amount of pigment was needed to produce the color making deep black clothing a sign of wealth. Most of the Imperial troops wear white or grey, allowing leaders like Vader, the Emperor, and Kylo Ren to stand out.
Grey
Grey is often associated with boredom and generally bleakness. Grey is also often associated with institutions devoid of humanity, imprisonment, and bureaucracy. While the Jedi and the Rebellion are visually eclectic and made up of a variety of species, the Empire is almost exclusively made up of humans wearing identical grey uniforms.
Get the Look
1. Prep and prime: Get your face ready with your moisturizer and/or primer. Prime your eyelids with your favorite primer. I like to apply the Physicians Formula Refreshmint Cucumber & Bamboo Eye De-Puffer before using a fluffy brush to cover your whole eyelid in a neutral shadow to make a nice canvas for blending.
2. Find your most intense matte black (I’m using the shade Black Truffle from the Huda Beauty Rose Gold Remastered Palette). Then get a crisp angle brush and draw a large dark wing. Don’t worry if its a little severe, the next step will be blending it out.
3. Now we’re blending it out. Take the shade Suede from the same palette and a small rounded brush and blend across the eyelid. Use it to define the crease a little as well.
4. For this next part of the look I’m going back to my new favorite, the Colourpop and Kathleen Lights So Jaded Palette. Use a flat brush or your finger to spread the shade Diamond all over the lid.
5. Take another angle brush and the shade Ruby and draw a little line from your inner corner to the middle of your crease.
6. Use the same shade and the same brush and follow your lower lash line and draw it out to follow the curve of your wing.
7. Dip back into Diamond and add it to your inner corner.
8. Now that you’ve finished with your eyeshadow, clean up any fallout and do the rest of your normal makeup; foundation, concealer, contour, brows etc. For this look I skipped the blush and just used a little more Diamond for a highlighter.
9. To finish the look use a muted matte red lip. I’m going with It’s A Banger Lux Liquid Lipstick from Colourpop (sadly this collection is currently sold out)
