It’s no secret that I love The Good Place. It was a wonderful show that balanced being both silly and heartfelt and always encouraged you to be a little better than you were yesterday.

I cosplayed as Janet last year, and that was great. Now I wanted a new challenge. I’m not sure if you’d call it closet cosplay or bounding, but I put together outfits inspired by each of the six main The Good Place characters.

I kept my rules pretty simple:

  1. Can a person familiar with the show recognize them?
  2. Would I actually wear this?

I kept the hair and makeup basic as I’m not very good at either!

Eleanor Shellstrop

When we first meet Eleanor, she’s wearing her “Arizona Trashbag” wardrobe, the clothes of the “Real Eleanor.” As she matures throughout the series, Eleanor starts wearing cute and colorful tops with fun embellishments like stripes and stars, sometimes with a collared shirt layered under it.

When I found this bright orange sweatshirt, I knew that I had the basis for my Eleanor outfit. It’s so much fun!

Chidi Anagonye

Chidi is almost always dressed in a version of grown-up nerd clothes, fitting for someone who was a professor of ethics. He prefers sweaters and sweater vests with a shirt underneath and simple pants. Chidi stuck to this look so strongly that Eleanor would tease him about it.

I actually had this outfit before I started this project. I had knitted the vest a year or two ago and later noticed how Chidi-like it is. I basically look like Chidi-Janet from the “Janet(s)” episode.

Jason Mendoza

Jason has two sets of clothing. First, his Jianyu monk robes. Then, his Jason from Florida OOTDs. His Jason clothes were mostly comfortable clothes that made it easy to practice with his 60 person dance crew. He favored hoodies over wild t-shirts.

My Jason outfit really suits the work from home vibe. The pants and sweatshirt are really comfortable. I went for a Jacksonville Jaguars tee underneath because they’re Jason’s favorite team.

Tahani Al-Jamil

Tahani prefers elegant ladylike clothes with long full skirts and floral prints. She also likes fine jewelry like pearls and diamonds. Dressing down is not something that ever enters her mind.

A Tahani-inspired outfit was going to be the hardest for me personally. I don’t go for long floral dresses and such things. I got really lucky when I found this dress. It has the Tahani vibe and floral print without being too prim for me to wear. And it has pockets! I swapped out Tahani’s signature pearls for a necklace made of redwood beads, again to make it a little bit more me.

Michael

The reformed demon is best known for his suits and bowties. His suits were a little bit flashier than the clothes of the other demons, and sometimes his ties were actual peacock feathers.

I have no need for a suit so I went for “off the rack separates,” even if Tahani looked down on them. I love these pants and can’t wait to find other things to wear with them. The blouse is close to a peacock blue and has a ruffle at the neck. That’s as close to a bowtie as I was going to get! A black blazer completes my not-a-suit suit.

Janet

Janet is the not-a-girl, not-a-robot foundational mainframe of The Good Place. Her iconic purple outfit was modeled on flight attendant uniforms. The cloud print blouse contributes to her heavenly look.

I tried hard to make my Janet outfit look less uniform-like but still keep with Janet’s signature look. I swapped out her skirt for a denim one and a tie-neck blouse with a fun print. I did keep the cardigan purple because Janet needs to have purple.

When I go shopping I find myself looking at clothes and thinking of which character would wear which piece. It was so much fun to put some of these outfits together and wear them!
