Y’all, I love Halloween. I love the vibes, the lower temperatures, and dressing up. But also, I’m a big chicken. I don’t really love jump scares. I have coulrophobia (an irrational and debilitating fear of clowns), and as someone who walks to work at 3:30 am, I don’t need to be worrying about murderers.

So I’ve pulled some of my favorite not-so-spooky movies for Halloween to help my fellow chickens experience all the best of the season!

Lost Boys

You ever think about vampires in the eighties? Like, big hair, leather jackets, and a shirtless saxophone player vampires. Honestly, I don’t know what else you could want in a movie. Throw in the Peter Pan allusions and the actually great story, and you have Lost Boys! I was introduced to this movie after a friend saw how much I love Bill & Ted. Alex Winter (Bill) is one of the vampires! I really lose myself in love for this movie, and it’s one that I’ll be watching on October 31st.

The Monster Squad

This is another “of its time” movies. It’s full of classic monsters and features the most iconic shirt for a child to wear: it literally just says “Steven King Rules”. In The Monster Squad a group of young kids find out that monsters exist and they’re planning on taking over the world. It’s up to them to stop the monsters and save us all.

The Babysitter (and the sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen)

I love a dumb slasher, and these Babysitter movies exemplify those tropes. A super cool babysitter, Bea, needs the blood of an innocent to complete a ritual with her friends. But when Cole, her babysitting charge and the fountain of said innocent blood sees what’s going on and calls the cops, things get messy. The sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, came out on September 10th. Both movies are on Netflix and an absolute blast to watch.

Happy Death Day (and its sequel: Happy Death Day 2U)

Happy Death Day is another dumb movie that I love. I saw the first one at home and the second in theaters. While Theresa (the main character) is just trying to make it through her day, she keeps getting killed. But every time she dies, she restarts her day. She has to avoid the killer and figure out who they are before her body gives up and she dies for real. It’s so dumb and fun, and I can’t wait to watch it again this year!

Return of the Living Dead

While watching Monster Squad, I fell in love with a poster in their clubhouse. I mention it here because the poster, one of Return of the Living Dead, is what got me to watch this movie! It’s a classic zombie movie, with some fantastic practical effects and absolutely ridiculous punks. Much like most zombie flicks, it’s a survival movie. The jump scares are predictable, the characters are hilarious and the effects are cheesy and fantastic. I really love this movie and think it deserves your time.

I know this is only a couple movies, and October is 31 whole days!

So, below is a list of spooky movies that my friends and I are watching all October long!

I haven’t seen most of the below movies, but I know that they’re a good mix of genuinely scary and big dumb movies. I’ve even included some pumpkins! Look for the “🎃” next to the movies I’ve seen from the list!
