Self care is very important around here. So important that we’ve dedicated a bunch of mini episodes of our podcast to it. And our week two theme for 5 Fandom Friday!

If you don’t know 5 Fandom Friday, it’s a weekly fandom conversation started by Super Space Chick and The Nerdy Girlie. We’re revamping it, and we would love if you’d join us (on your own blog or social media). Just use the hashtag #5FandomFriday so we can find you!

Okay, without further ado, my 5 favorite ways to enjoy self care.

1. Buy Yourself Flowers

I used to think this was lame. I want to go back in time and smack that version of myself. Buying yourself flowers is such an amazing way to take control of your happiness with very little time and money. Of course flowers can be expensive, but places like Trader Joe’s and farmer’s markets are a perfect solution. Or, if you have a green thumb, you can pick yourself up a sweet little plant!

2. Spend Time with Friends

As the world’s biggest extrovert, this is my absolute top form of self care. I love parties, friend dates, long phone calls, literally anything that involves the people I like. If you’re a little less extroverted, this can be one-on-one time. Whatever amount of socialization works best for you.

3. Re-Watch a Favorite TV Show

I’m doing this one right now as I write this. After watching the Golden Globes and being reminded of the magnificence that is Andrew Scott, I wanted to rewatch everything he’s ever been in. Starting with Fleabag (my #1 show forever) and now onto Sherlock. There’s something so comforting about rewatching an old favorite (we have a wonderful article about this from Katy Herman in Issue 004 of The Sartorial Geek magazine). You know what you’re getting, and you know that you’re going to like it, and that’s wonderful.

4. Take Care of Something that’s Bothering You

The times that I tend to need self care the most are when I feel like my to do list is 60 miles long. And, honestly, the thing that makes me feel better about it is crossing some things off that list. My best tip here is to choose something that doesn’t take long but has been weighing on your mind forever (setting up a doctor’s appointment, shipping back a return or exchange, sending a thank you text). It’s not necessarily fun, but it feels really good.

5. Stretch

Thanks to spending so much time with Geek Girl Strong, I believe in the power of moving your body. I’ve never been super into yoga, but my 30’s have shown me the glory that is child’s pose. I 100% hold stress in my neck and shoulders, so taking a minute (or a lot of minutes) to work out those muscles makes me feel like a new person. My personal recommendation is Yoga with Adrienne; she has so many free videos on YouTube and is adorable and not obnoxious. Win, win, win.
