We’re back with another edition of Wandering Through the Shelves’ Thursday Movie Picks. This week, our theme is 2019 releases. These aren’t necessarily my favorite movies from 2019, but they’re the ones I have the most feelings about.
Jojo Rabbit
I think Jojo Rabbit actually was my favorite movie last year. Taika Waititi has never ever disappointed me, and this time was no different. All of the actors in this film are wonderful, but the kids really steal the show. It’s funny and emotional and heart breaking. Please see this movie.
Midsommar
I was not expecting Midsommar to be cathartic, but in that respect I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve only recently worked up the courage to see horror films in theaters, and I’m really glad I made it happen for this one.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I know Brad Pitt has been a heartthrob for, you know, decades, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the first time I really got it. And for that, this movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
Knives Out
I left the theater with the feeling that Knives Out was made just for me. It’s not perfect, but it combines everything I love: stellar cast + murder mystery + Chris Evans. If I had to write out the equation to my heart, that would be it.
Detective Pikachu
Detective Pikachu wins the award for the most surprisingly-lovely movie of 2019. I like Pokémon, but I was pretty sure there was no possible way this movie would be good. Readers, I was wrong. It was fun and heart-warming and insane and nostalgic and ended so well. Pika pika!

Knives Out was sooooooooooooo good!
I absolutely loved it!
I just watched Once Upon a Time..last night and really enjoyed and so wished it really did end that way. I wonder if Roman Polanski saw it or heard how the plot goes. I have not seen the others but really want to see JoJo Rabbit.
JoJo Rabbit is so wonderful!
