We’re currently in the middle of Sartorial Geek’s biggest annual fashion challenge—Summer #SGFashionFix—that runs all month long! This is Week 4. So we’re over half-way through, but that doesn’t mean you can’t jump in! In fact, this might be the best week for debuting your geek chic looks because the theme is about the conventions we’re missing this year due to the pandemic, like San Diego Comic Con.

With the Missed CON-nections prompt, we wanted to assuage your convention blues by giving you the opportunity to show us what geek fashion you would’ve worn to the big events anyway. What’s that cosplay you’ve been working on? What’s your Hall H line purgatory uniform? How would you have geeked out a party outfit? I mentioned this in the Sartorial Geek Podcast, but it’s also a great time to show us what you would wear out if you didn’t have to worry about the heat or walking around all day.

Another tip from that episode from co-host Nina was to not feel pressured to buy anything specifically for this challenge. We want you to think creatively about what’s already in your closet! Plus, that gives you no excuse to hold off on joining #sgfashionfix because you already have everything you need. That said, I’m sharing a simple color-blocked character outfit I wore to LA Comic Con last year that was put together from things I already owned.

Captain Marvel Chic

SG FashionFix: Missed CON-nections

I made a last minute decision to go to LA Comic Con last October. So I put together a look I knew would be comfortable and themed. Superheroes like Captain Marvel who have primary colors in their signature costumes are great for versatility because so many heroes share the same color schemes. For example, I had the red shirt and gold boots in this outfit from past Wonder Woman looks, and I borrowed the blue trousers from my day job wardrobe.

To make this specifically Captain Marvel themed, I relied on my accessories. The most obvious is the branded Captain Marvel bag, but I also added a blue beret embroidered with constellations (photo showing that detail is from a different outfit) and a star necklace. I’d re-discovered this necklace while organizing my jewelry and thought it was perfect for Captain Marvel because of the star’s design and how it would lay on my chest around where the star is on her costume.

I hope this helps to show you that your outfits don’t have to be elaborate to be geek chic and that inspiration can come from anywhere. I was going to roll into LA Comic Con in a graphic tee, but finding that necklace changed my mind about what cute-casual look I wanted to wear. So again, if you’re hesitant to join #sgfashionfix, I encourage you to take the risk anyway! Look at the hashtag to see the varied ways people have participated, and don’t worry. We all just want to feel a bit like we’re at a con with our fellow nerds.
