For week three of the Fashion Fix challenge, I had a ton of ideas for different characters I wanted to try to embody. Complex female characters are kind of my thing, and happen to be this week’s theme. I thought about nerdy Velma from Scooby Doo. Julia Wicker from The Magicians (which I just finished binge watching and am now going through withdrawals). And finally, one of my favorite TV latinas, Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
But, I had to be true to myself. My main fandom is Star Wars, which is ultimately filled with Complex Female Characters. Ashoka, Rey, Leia, Sabine. All fantastic role models that I truly look up to. And with all of those, comes one of my favorites, Hera Syndulla.
Hera Syndulla is a Twi’lek from Star Wars Rebels. She’s the mom friend and pilot of the Ghost family. Fully invested in the rebellion and saving the galaxy, while also offering full love and support to those important to her, make her a total icon. She’s complex, and three-dimensional. We see so many sides of Hera throughout the series, between her romance with Kanan, her family issues, and her utter loyalty to the cause.
The Fit
Like all cartoons, Hera wears pretty much the same outfit throughout the series. But it’s pretty tough to replicate and wear a flight suit, helmet, and goggles out in public for a normal, stylish outfit. Enter: the creativity.
For this look, I brought together a brown jumpsuit from Uniqlo, a grey mock-turtleneck crop from Urban Outfitters, and my brown Dr. Martens. What do you think?
The Lekku (Hair)
Twi’leks have long head-tails in place of hair called lekku. This is one of the defining traits of this alien species. However, I am not a Twi’lek, nor do I have lekku. So I came up with the next best thing: high pig-tails! Pigtails have been one of my favorite hairstyles lately, but I find it so diffult to fashion in normal day settings (and not look like a toddler). So, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity!
Flight Gear (Accessories)
So I felt like, as awesome as the outfit was alone, I needed something more. I decided to accessorize a bit this time! First thing to note, I wore a green (jade) bracelet to represent Hera’s green skin. You can see it best in the picture above (conveniently on the same wrist as my Kylo Ren tattoo)!
I also wore a small rebel alliance necklace in rose gold from BoxLunch! And a pair of star climbing earrings to match with the whole space theme!
And last, to put it all together and complete the look, I wore my rebellion flight suit Loungefly mini-backpack! I got the bag a few years ago at a con and hadn’t used it in awhile. This was another perfect opportunity to bust it out and put it together with this outfit!
And that’s it! That’s the whole look. This was so much fun to pull together, and it was great to be Hera for the time I wore this. I felt inspired and excited, and true to myself. Definitely will be wearing this look again!
I can’t wait for the next outfit for the challenge!
