Even on a network that brought us Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, AMC’s Preacher is… different.
Honestly, how to even describe it? Based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher follows former-criminal-now-man-of-the-cloth Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), badass beeyotch Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) on their quest to find God, who has been missing since Season 1.
Like the comics, the show has graphic violence, all manner of sexual fetishes, and, of course, more religious confusion than you can shake a stick at. Will our band of “heroes” (I’m using that term VERY loosely, as none of the main characters are heroic in any traditional sense) find answers in Season 3? Let’s remember where we left off and ponder where things may go from here… Spoilers ahead!
Season 2 featured, among other things…
The trio running from the ruthless Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish). Cassidy reuniting with his son and turning him into a vampire (then practically instantly regretting it). Jesse meeting Herr Starr (Pip Torrens), the leader of The Grail, who asks Jesse to be the new Messiah (the actual Messiah is… shall we say, less than qualified). And Tulip unwillingly reuniting with her husband, Viktor. If all that weren’t enough, Eugene/Arseface (Ian Coletti) befriends Hitler while stuck in Hell, but the duo eventually escape.
With the exception of the Hitler subplot (I have NO idea if or how that’s going to pay off down the road), all of the adventures in Season 2 lead us to the biggest cliffhanger in the show’s (albeit short) history.
After realizing that her neighbor, Jenny, is a spy for The Grail (actual name Featherstone, played by Julie Ann Emery), Tulip confronts her and ends up getting shot. Cassidy wants to save her by turning her into a vampire, but Jesse fights him, insisting that they have to let her die. WHAT?!?!
In nearly any other show, a season finale death of a main character would be a HUGE turning point.
Tulip’s death seems to be a turning point, but in a different way. Yes, that’s right, boys and girls…it looks like Jesse is going to bring Tulip to Angelville to see if his grandmother can bring her back to life. How true to the comics will this storyline be? Will we get more details about Jesse’s family and upbringing? Have we really seen the end of Tulip? What in the heck is going on with Hitler? I guess we’ll start to get some answers when Season 3 kicks off on Sunday night…
