I spend a lot of my Netflix time browsing through the kids channel. I’d love to blame my nieces and nephews, but really I’m just a child at heart. I enjoy the wholesome and imaginative feeling of kids shows and the way they distill complex issues into simple truths.
Here are the top Netflix kids shows that you need to binge RIGHT NOW!
She-Ra And The Princesses of Power
This reboot is a far cry from the original 80’s “He Man” spin off. The Netflix Original show has been tremendously popular and is just about to release a fourth season.
If you’ve been to any cons this year, you’ve probably seen a few people cosplaying the gorgeous new look all the characters have. The body diversity is fantastic. Glimmer has REAL THIGHS, ya’ll.
There are multiple openly LGBTQI+ characters (and more that are hinted at). But the best thing is that they don’t make a big deal out of it. They are real, cool, entertaining characters… oh and by the way, they’re in a same sex couple.
And if you’re into villain characters who are somehow loveable and you care about just as much as the protagonists, you’re in for a real treat.
I could talk about how great this show is for ages, but I’ll stop here so you can go add it to your “to watch” list. Right now. I’ll wait.
The Dragon Prince
People were saying that The Dragon Prince is the new Avatar: The Last Airbender. I scoffed. I refused to watch it for a while. Then one fateful rainy day… I finally got into it. And it lived up to the hype.
(It helps that it’s written by the same people.)
The story is set in a magical world called Xadia, where dangerous dark magic has upset the balance between humanity and other magical races. With their world on the brink of all-out war, two young princes and an elven assassin discover a secret that may save them all… but of course, it’s not that simple.
Our young heroes are faced with an epic quest, make plenty of mistakes, and are being pursued by so many people it’s difficult to know who is friend or foe.
The second season was released in early 2019, and a third season has been confirmed.
BONUS: All the elves have Scottish accents.
Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir
This show is basically the new Sailor Moon.
If that hasn’t already sold you, here’s the gist… Marinette is a normal teenage girl who is super awkward, kind hearted, and has some pretty incredible problem-solving skills. She’s also a crime-fighting superhero called Ladybug, assisted by her pun loving superhero pal, Cat Noir.
Cat Noir, of course, is in love with Ladybug. And Ladybug (aka Marinette) is in love with Adrien… who she doesn’t know is Cat Noir. This, my friends, is what we call a lovesquare. It’s a very complicated shipping situation… and SO MUCH FUN.
Honestly, it’s worth watching the episodes on YouTube instead of Netflix JUST to read all the comments from fans about their relationship. The fangirling is strong with this fandom.
Aside from the love-square situation, this series is really sweet hearted, adventurous, and fun to watch. Season 3 is currently being released, and Seasons 4 and 5 are already in production. I predict this series will be sticking around for a while.
The characters even have official Instagram accounts where they all share pics of them hanging out with each other that are often tied in with the episode plots.
Voltron
Yet another remake of an 80’s cartoon – Clearly Netflix has realised they’re onto a good thing.
I confess, I haven’t watched this show yet. But last year I was at a convention next to a booth that sold Voltron fan art, and they were consistently inundated with fans gushing about the show.
Teenagers transported from Earth become pilots for robotic lions to fight in an intergalactic war. It’s a bit like Power Rangers in space, but with more sass. They have to work together to learn how to assemble Voltron and save… well, pretty much everything.
All 8 seasons are currently on Netflix, so get ready to settle in for a long binging session.
No Good Nick
I’ll be honest. I watched this show purely because it has Samwise Gamgee (Sean Austin) and Sabrina The Teenage Witch (Melissa Joan Hart) in it.
What I didn’t expect was a compelling plot, acting from teenagers that absolutely KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF, and emotional and societal issues dealt with in such a raw and real way that I cried.
Season 1 and 2 are currently on Netflix, and unfortunately it hasn’t been picked up for another season. But it’s definitely worth watching the first two seasons… without spoiling too much, season two does have a pretty wrapped up and satisfying ending.
Now you’ve got all these amazing Netflix Kids shows on your radar… happy binging!
