Not going to lie, I’m pretty devastated about the postponing of Mulan. Extremely understood, of course, given the whole world situation right now. But still pretty bummed.

Mulan is my favorite Disney movie, favorite Disney princess, and favorite Disney couple. Lots of favorites all in one. I was extremely excited about the live-action retelling of this epic Chinese ballad.

To honor the movie, I decided to throw together two looks for everyone today. Closet cosplays, if you will, as I’ve started calling them: Shang and Ping.

Sporty Shang

For this look, I wanted to go with something fun and sporty. Shang is a general in the war and, while that’s totally heavy, we also get some pretty awesome training montages from him. Shang has gifted fans the ultimate workout and gym song, and for that, I knew I needed to rock my Adidas.

First, my top is from Friday Apparel! The shirt comes in a number of different colors, and I chose this yellow color because, well, I love it. I also figured it would go wonderfully with these pants, a red or olive green skirt, or green pants, while still feeding my Mulan aesthetic.

Also, have I mentioned I’ll Make A Man Out Of You is my favorite song from the movie? And that it’s probably my first or second favorite Disney song in general? No? Well, have I mentioned how weirdly obsessed I am with crescent moons? Also no? (This shirt was made for me.)

I also wore my red Adidas joggers and my Lannister pair of Ultraboosts from their Game of Thrones collection. They match so many of my faves: the Lannisters, Gryffindor, and now Shang! The shoes have a few incredible details on them that were pretty difficult to snap in a picture, but I hope you like the combo with my jade ring and bracelet!

Closet Cosplay 2: Ping

Beads of jade, for beauty, you must proudly show

I actually wanted to make a Mulan look-book featuring five different outfits based on different characters and vibes from the animated Disney movie. (My Premier ran out so the video is still in a TBD stage.) But I got through my first look, which was Mulan herself. It was based on the blue dress she wears towards the end of the movie. You know, the one she saves China in. Well, as I was filming, I had this family watching me film the entire time and it was EXTREMELY awkward for this little introvert. But, hey, I guess everyone’s pretty bored during this quarantine, and I was free entertainment.

Anyway, back to the outfit.

I wanted to put a look together based on Ping. I mostly wanted to showcase the whole duality of our favorite war heroes (but more importantly their training arcs.) So, I went for a slightly more girly look for this one.

The top is none other than the March shirt of the month from Jordandené. I knew I had to have it the moment I saw it. The color of the text is probably my favorite shade of green, a shade that all my friends have dubbed as “the Julie color.” I love anything in that slight in-between shade of green and blue. The base of the skirt is a dark heather grey, which ultimately matched perfectly with this off-black shirt.

The Details

I also wanted to mention my necklace. So, it’s currently the year of the rat in the Lunar year. And apparently, if it’s YOUR zodiac year, that means you’ll have some pretty bad luck. I happen to be a rat. I bought this jade ox to bring me some special luck over this upcoming year (who knew a pandemic would happen!). The ox apparently is meant to be my “special friend” who’ll protect me, and I felt like it was only fitting to wear it with these outfits! I put it on whenever I feel I need an extra little pick me up, or luck.

I also wore these Lucky Brand flats because they reminded me of Ping/Mulan’s from the film! All I could keep thinking about was when she threw her shoe at Shan Yu. To be honest, Shan Yu is a pretty progressive Disney villain. He didn’t blink twice at Mulan’s gender reveal, nor cared whether she was male or female, he just knew she killed all his men, and for that he would kill her. You go, Shan Yu! What an equal opportunist!

Wrap Up

I hope this pandemic wraps up soon for a whole number of reasons. I miss movies, I miss friends, and I miss going to Target.

Until all of this gets resolved, I hope you all are staying safe and are doing all the things to keep you sane! I honestly haven’t gotten out of PJs in a hot minute before these photos, so I definitely needed this. Hope you all enjoy what I came up with!

Be true to your hearts!
