As a glasses wearer and a makeup lover, I sometimes find it difficult to make the two work for me. Either you can’t see my awesome nerdy makeup behind my glasses, or I find mascara smudges all over said glasses instead. I still wear contacts a lot of the time if I’m going for a really dramatic eye or a cosplay look, but I’ve definitely learned some tips and tricks to help make my makeup pop (and also keep it off my glasses).
Waterproof Mascara
I used to get mascara all over my glasses. If I put my glasses on before my mascara was completely dry, my lashes would hit the lenses and get black smudges all over them. Even if I waited for them to dry, sometimes during the day I would find crumbled flakes of mascara clinging to the lenses for dear life. I find using a good waterproof mascara helps avoid this dilemma. Also, check your mascara to make sure it’s still good, because old mascara can become dry and flaky. The recommended shelf life for a tube of mascara is three months. I recommend getting little sample size mascaras (they’re cheaper, and you won’t have to end up throwing out as much mascara once it starts drying up).
Eye Primer
Another thing I do to help keep my glasses clean is to use eye primer. It helps my eyeshadow stay on longer instead of transferring to my lenses. I personally prefer Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion, but there are so many great brands out there.
Setting Powder
My foundation often ends up on the nosepiece of my glasses, especially on a hot day. It isn’t perfect, but I find if I use setting powder over my foundation, it doesn’t come off as much.
Clean Your Glasses Often
I’m really bad at actually remembering to clean my glasses, so makeup just builds up on them. Apparently cleaning day’s worth of mascara off your glasses is way easier than waiting an entire week. Who knew?
Glitter
For the days I want to make my makeup really pop without wearing contacts, I love using stuff like glitter to show off my eyes even behind my frames. You can’t always see a perfect cut crease behind my frames, but you can sure see the glitter.
Bright Colors
Much like glitter, bright colours also show up behind most frames. Not everyone is comfortable with bright eyeshadow but if you are, it can be a lot of fun.
Colored Eyeliner
If bright eyeshadow isn’t your thing, colored eyeliner can always make your eyes pop, too. I love using purple or teal eyeliner.
Lipstick
Another thing you can do is bring focus to your lips instead! I love a classic red lip, but it’s also a lot of fun to use a bold purple or other fun colors.
Cosplay Something Where You Can Wear Glasses
I do wear contacts when I cosplay, but every once in awhile I come across a character who wears glasses similar to mine, and then I actually get to be comfortable for a day. I’m cosplaying Elle Whittimer from Geekerella at Emerald City Comic Con, so I’ll get to wear glasses then. Another cosplay that I’d love to try is young Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time.
