How’s everyone doing? Those of you out there working, thank you so much for keeping the world turning. Those of you at home, hopefully you’re finding ways to use your free time that helps you stay sane.

For me, when I’m not doing work-at-home stuff, I’m knitting, and reading, and knitting some more.

I Want To Believe In Yarn Mulder Pattern Close Up

The project I chose to be my lockdown knitting project was the Mulder cowl by Haley Geary. I found it sometime last year while scrolling through Ravelry. When I saw the little alien faces, I knew that I had to make it. When I saw the name, I laughed to myself a little. It was just perfect.

To make it, I used one of my favorite yarns: Wool of the Andes Worsted, from Knit Picks. It’s a medium weight yarn that’s great for lots of projects.

The background color is Hyacinth, which is a nice “blurple” color that works great for outer space. The green of the alien faces started out as a bare undyed ball of yarn. I dyed it myself using food coloring to get just the right shade.

Mulder was a well written pattern, with clear instructions and a good chart.

Charts in knitting patterns are used to instruct the knitter know which color to use. I only made 2 small changes from the pattern’s instructions.

The first was that I used knitting needles one size smaller than the recommended size. This is very common in knitting; everyone knits a little bit differently.

The second was that I completed the border with the smaller size instructions, even though I was doing the larger sized project. This was just a personal aesthetic decision.

The cowl worked up pretty quickly. I was at the halfway point before I knew it. Working on a few rounds here and there throughout my day was a great way to relax. Plus the alien faces were so cute.

I Want To Believe In Yarn Mulder Cowl final product

I was really happy with the final result. The colors came out exactly how I planned them in my head, and the pattern was really fun.

It wasn’t too complicated, so any knitter who wants to do their first two-color project should really give it a try. The only problem that I have is now that its spring, I’m going to have to wait for cooler weather to wear it!
