‘Tis the season, and I’ve been thinking about ways to make the usual geek outfits more festive. Here are holiday style tips for geeks that aren’t just putting on another ugly Christmas sweater.
Just Add Plaid
There’s something about plaid that puts me in that winter state of mind. Maybe it’s the ubiquitous flannel shirts or the liberal use of tartan on throws and scarves. Whatever it is, you can’t deny its association with the holiday season. So it’s an easy way to add festive flair to the geeky outfits you already wear.
I basically live in my Jordandené sweatshirts during the cold months, but when I want to make them more holiday appropriate, I wearing them with plaid leggings. For this Loki crop, it made sense to go with something green, but the great thing about plaid is that it doesn’t just come in Christmas-y greens and reds. So if you fear looking like one of Santa’s Elves, you can choose a more unusual plaid color like purple or even a neutral black and white and it’ll still be festive.
Elegant Neutrals
I can’t deny the elegance of a neutral-toned look, and they are great for holiday dinners and parties if you want to look dressy casual. I also love layers and heavier fabrics like wool in winter styles. But how to mix that with geek chic? My brain goes to the principles of Disneybounding.
I based my look on Rey’s training outfit in THE LAST JEDI, which is predominantly gray. I had the advantage of owning a Rey-inspired knit vest from Elhofferdesign, but to dress up the look, I paired it with a fitted black shirt and wool trousers. The more tailored pieces and heavier fabrics make the outfit more chic. Continuing that trend, I wore heeled boots and a statement necklace that is still minimalistic to go with the spirit of the character. My necklace is from Jasmine Law (Plant Haus), who specializes in pressed flower glass pendants.
So neutrals don’t have to be boring and they can be geeky. Just consider items in luxe materials or have interesting textures, and don’t be afraid to mix and match them.
Jewel Tones & Sparkle
Of all holiday style tips, you’ll probably hear this one the most – wear jewel tones. They make any outfit that much more jolly because of the saturated, rich color. It’s also easy to incorporate into geek wear because so many of our faves already rock bold signature colors.
The green of my Elhofferdesign Loki tunic is a beautiful gemstone shade, but I punched it up with emerald green leggings and a sheer blue blouse. I accessorized with a blue purse and jeweled headband as a nod to the Tesseract and Infinity Stones.
It helps that Loki’s signature colors are a festive green and gold, but even if you don’t wear usual holiday colors, jewel tones like this are flattering and warm up winter settings. Everything is cold and gray (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) during the holidays, so it’s nice to stand out like a jewel yourself.
And if wearing color just isn’t your thing, then consider wearing actual jewels. Nothing gives off a more celebratory vibe during the run-up to New Year’s than a little sparkle. I did both (jewel tones and jewels) for my Loki party outfit above, but he and I can both be extra. So you do you.
I hope this helps with your seasonal styling and events, whether they be fandom-related or not! And if all else fails, you can definitely still wear that ugly Christmas sweater. I’ve got a few favorites I wear every year, too.
