Have you ever seen a makeup collection or palette that you’re not entirely sure you’ll ever use, but you just need to get your hands on it anyway? That’s exactly how I felt when I saw The Marauders, Mugwumps, and Muggles Collection. It’s a collection of Harry Potter-inspired eyeshadows and lip tints by Shiro Cosmetics. The collection in its entirety includes twenty shades of loose powder eyeshadows, three different lip tints, and two different “Chocolate Frog” face powders.
It’s clearly a lot, so it’s no surprise the whole thing will run you $147.00.
I wasn’t ready for that much of a commitment, especially as someone who only wears eyeshadow once in a blue moon. (AKA when I make these blog posts). But, in all of their awesomeness, Shiro Cosmetics has an option for people like me and offers sample sizes of their entire collection, minus the face powders. So, for less than $25.00, they’ll send you individual sample bags of the shadows and three jars of tint. It’s all resealable and generous enough for several uses.
The coolest thing about this collection is how perfectly every shade reflects its source material.
“A Free Elf” is a burlap sack mustard, while “Have a Biscuit, Potter” is a pure metallic emerald reminiscent of everyone’s favorite Headmistress. I don’t think anybody would expect that kind of consistency across every single shade. But it’s there and it’s amazing.
The only thing that’s not so cool? Loose powder is messy and even messier when it’s not in a contained jar. It’s not so much of a problem when you need to use a shade or two. However, swatching all twenty of them left me incredibly frustrated.
L to R: “He Who Must Not Be Named”, “A Free Elf”, “All Kinds of Courage”, “You’re Just As Sane As I Am”, “Wizard Wheezes”, “There’s No Such Thing As Magic”, “The Well Organized Mind”, “Constant Vigilance”.
Top Row, L to R: “That’s Chess!”, “Too Big To Be Allowed”, “A Bit of Light Reading”, “Have a Biscuit, Potter”, “Not Yet So Damaged”, “Metamorphmagus”.
Bottom Row, L to R: “Mad As Her Master”, “The Boy Who Lived”, “If You’ve Got Enough Nerve”, “After All This Time”, “Too Old, Too Poor, Too Dangerous”, “Dark and Light Inside Us”
L to R: “Polyjuice”, “Felix Felicis”, “Amortentia”
The lip tints, shown above, appeared different from my expectations. The green shade, “Polyjuice”, didn’t exactly seem wearable to me, unless that gooey shade of Ghostbusters green is your thing. I layerd “Felix Felicis” in my swatch to show just how much color payoff you can get out of it. (Again, if that color is your thing– personally, I would just go with a single swipe for a shimmery look) But, it did have a yummy, Butterbeer-like scent to it. I also layered “Amortentia” to show a berry shade I probably own seven different variations of. (It’s a great color, okay?)
I played with the shades I thought even an eyeshadow noob such as myself could easily wear.
Spoiler alert: not that easy. I used “Constant Vigilance” with a touch of a mix of “A Free Elf” and “Dark and Light Inside All Of Us” for this look. I’m also wearing just a swipe of “Amortentia” in the picture shown above, but I didn’t end up keeping it on.
This look turned out to be pretty bold with its touch of Quidditch-esque shimmery gold, so I insisted on giving it the red lip it deserved to go along with it.
And I’m not gonna lie: with that touch extending around my lower lid, I felt pretty glamorous. Shiro Cosmetics, I will be back again, hopefully for some full-sized products this time.
