I have a love/hate relationship with Chewing Gum.
Don’t get me wrong: Chewing Gum is incredibly clever and there’s more love in that relationship than anything, but sometimes (every episode), the leading lady, Tracey Gordon’s, adventures make me cringe with my entire body.
Remember how Liz Lemon of 30 Rock fame was funny, but usually in uncomfortable, sometimes gross ways?
Tracey Gordon has her beat, and she just might be the quirkiest, most uncomfortable character on television. Not New Girl, Zooey Deschanel, cutsey-quirky. Tracey is the refreshing kind of quirky that makes you grimace, but still not turn away.
She’s a real, strange woman that collects a myriad of dizzying and absurd sexual encounters on her coming-of-age journey as she leaves her days of religious abstinence in the past. And what’s fun, though sometimes painful, about Chewing Gum, is that none of it is sugar-coated. Tracey’s awakening is awkward and hilarious at times, and what we all should have been told those days would have been like at one point or another.
Also, she prays to Beyoncé. #Relatable.
Tracey boasts the brightest of wardrobes to match her colorful personality. Her closet is full of neon pops of color and fun prints. In fact, the only time you see Tracey in something dark and provocative is when her friend gives her a makeover and she looks like an entirely different person.
It wasn’t only because of the blonde wig and colored contacts– it just simply isn’t her.
Tracey loves color and sweaters and anything collared. While her personality doesn’t fit the old, overdone, “girl next door” trope, her wardrobe certainly seems to reflect one: it’s cute and preppy and approachable with simple silhouettes and a low-maintenance, barely-there makeup look.
Tracey is comfortable in her own skin and comfortable with being comfortable. Sometimes that means showing up to a party in pajama pants and UGG boots, but haven’t we all wanted to do that at one point in our lives, anyway? She just had the courage to.
Tracey is the perfect example of how ever-changing comfy styles can still be chic, and maybe even earn you “style icon” status.
You can follow Tracey’s adventures in Chewing Gum on Netflix now.
