“Everything with Midge starts with an accessory.” It wasn’t very long before Miriam Maisel’s mother, Rose, spoke this truth that I realized how extraordinary the fashion is in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Of course, I shouldn’t have expected anything else from a show centered around an Upper West Side-dwelling 50’s housewife. But, Miriam Maisel– or Midge, as we so affectionately hear her referred to as– still showed out in everything I wanted and more.
Perhaps it’s her funny-girl persona that makes everything about Midge’s wardrobe stand out on screen. Or, perhaps it’s because Rachel Brosnahan just rocks the styles so well. Seriously, it looks like she was plucked right out of the era and sent to us in a time machine. Whatever it is, I’m here for it. I’m here for Miriam Maisel and her wit, her talent, her hard work, and her impeccable wardrobe. (And I don’t care that I’m late to the game this time. I’m just happy I joined in at all.)
1950’s glam
Few things fill me with as much joy as the costumes in a period piece. After all, can you forget any of the outfits in works ranging from Downtown Abbey to Pride and Prejudice? No, of course not! The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel does not disappoint in this department. The show gives viewers a perfect glimpse into the fashion of the Fabulous Fifties– circle skirts, swing coats, and high-waisted capris galore. Here’s to hoping Modcloth gives us a Midge-inspired line because that would be nothing short of a match made in heaven.
Pretty in pink
200 swatches. It took 200 swatches of fabric to find the right shade of pink for this look. That sounds ridiculous, sure, but doesn’t Midge’s outfit speak for itself?
You probably recognize this outfit from ads, even if you haven’t seen the show. It was the first time a lot of us saw Midge, the first time we’re really introduced to her as a character. It’s not the last time we see her in these shades of pink, either. That fabulous coat is a recurring favorite and a perfect illustration of 50’s feminine-coded clothing.
“Everything with Midge starts with an accessory.”
Yes, I’m revisiting this quote because I can’t stress its importance enough. (For context, her mother was talking about how Midge only learned to drive because she fell in love with a pair of pink driving gloves. She may have been mocking her, but they sound cute and I wanna know where I can get a pair.)
Accessories were everything in the 50’s and Midge knows how to rock them all. Hats. Elbow-length gloves. Scarves. Pearls. The dainty bracelet she’s rarely caught without. And probably more hats because she has a lot of them. No matter the accessory, she wears it effortlessly and perfectly ties her adorably chic wardrobe together.
