Kara Danvers is a lot of things: reporter, secret superhero, loving friend, and sister. Not to mention, she’s the television character I wish I had to look up to growing up.
And now, in celebration of Supergirl season three just hitting Netflix, I’m here to tell you why Kara Danvers is also a style icon.
It’s taken me awhile to cover Kara because, well, it’s taken me awhile to realize just how much I love her sense of style. Over the years, while Supergirl crew have done a superb job of dressing her, they’ve also done an even better job of not making Kara’s wardrobe the (or even a) focus of the show. Does she always look cute? Absolutely. Does she have time to talk about her super cute outfit when she has airplanes to lift and aliens to fight? Absolutely not.
That’s what I’m here to do now. Here are some of the best elements of Kara’s wardrobe.
Preppy For Grown-Ups
Think Betty Cooper, but more suitable for adults: ponytails, argyle, sweaters, cardigans, cardigans over sweaters. So many sweaters, you start questioning where she keeps them all. (Oh, right: in that amazing apartment. Does she get paid to be Supergirl? Is that how this works?) Kara somehow manages to keep her classic “girl next door” charm without seeming inevitably childish.
Menswear Details
Though we’ve seen her in an endless amount of skirts and dresses, Kara has served up several menswear-inspired looks, too. And she rocks them. Collared shirts under (more) sweaters, cigarette pants and chinos, big watches and loafers pull together effortless, low-maintenance looks that are a breath of fresh air from her usual sweet and feminine outfits. And I’m not going to lie: I even call those cute little oxfords she loves so much her “serious reporter shoes.”
A-Line Silhouettes
Kara does show out in a pencil skirt every now and then, but I think that she, along with the rest of the world, has accepted that ‘fit and flare’ is undeniably the greatest silhouette of all time. It’s universally flattering and so fun to twirl in, so what do we have to lose, right? She’s also mastered the trick of accentuating her waist even more with a perfectly fitted belt. (Mind you, this has inspired me to go dig all of those skinny belts out of the back of my closet.)
And of course, my favorite thing about Kara…
Even her superhero alter-ego is a sensible dresser.
