Hello fellow geeks, Ellen Ricks here: fashion lover and professional fangirl. Today I’m here to blend those two loves to create fashionable outfits, low-key based on your some of your favorite books/movies/tv/universes. I’m kicking things off with my favorite fandom: Harry Potter. But, with a little twist. We’re doing things Ilvermorny style.

Now, if you’re not familiar with the ever-expanding world of Harry Potter, you might want to check out Pottermore for all the latest cool things J.K. Rowling is writing. (Plus get sorted, choose your wand, get your patronus, and really claim your identity). Anyway, to give you a brief introduction, Ilvermorny is the Magical School in America, which is probably where I would go to magic school (even though I’m a Hufflepuff for life).

Ilvermorny and Hogwarts share a lot of similarities, like having four houses, but there are a few differences. For example, unlike Hogwarts where each house has their own colors, Ilvermorny only uses two colors to represent the whole school: blue and cranberry. Blue, because of founder Isolt Sayre’s desire to be sorted into Ravenclaw, and cranberry, because of co-founder James Steward’s love of cranberry pie (honestly the best reason for anything).

The four houses in Ilvermorny do not have regular animals as mascots. Instead, they are named after magical animals: Thunderbird, Wampus, Horned Serpent, and Pukwudgie. Each house represents a different aspect of humans: soul, body, mind, and heart.

Since we wouldn’t know a lot about Ilvermorny and its houses until the sequel to Fantastic Beast and Where To Find Them comes out in theaters on November 16 (counting the moments ya’ll), I thought I’d use my creative juices to work and create four different outfits based on each house.

So let’s get started!

Thunderbird: Represents the Soul/Favors Adventures

Fashion and Fandoms: Ilvermory Houses

This is actually my Ilvermorny house. (Raise your hand if you’re a Hufflepuff/Thunderbird). I became a huge fan of my house when I saw the Thunderbird in Fantastic Beast. He was the coolest thing ever. Also, this is Tina Goldstein’s house so that’s like 20 extra cool points.

For this outfit, “a person on a road trip without a destination in mind” inspired me. So have the cool leather jacket, the sunglasses, and the passport holder. A Star Wars backpack, because every adventurous soul needs a good backpack. I added the “I want adventure in the great wide somewhere” tank because I feel this is the motto of every Thunderbird (I know it’s mine). I also added a cute thunderbird necklace.

Horned Serpent: Represents the Mind/Favors Scholars

Fashion and Fandoms: Ilvermory Houses

When I first read that Horned Serpent represented the mind, my thoughts instantly went to “looking for a mind at work” so this outfit was born from that. This isn’t just a nerdy house. It’s a driven house, which is why I added a nice blazer and a fancy watch. I also added a lot of books to this outfit, because we all know that Horned Serpent must be readers.

Pukwudgie: Represents the heart/Favors Healers

Fashion and Fandoms: Ilvermory Houses

The house of Queen Goldstein folks, my fav character in the movie! I ship Queenie and Jacob so hard it hurts. This outfit is partly inspired by Queenie because I can totally see her wearing a dress covered in hearts. I also added a lot of healing stones and jewelry to the outfit, as well as the school colors, to make it more fun.

Wampus: Represents the body/Favors Warriors

Fashion and Fandoms: Ilvermory Houses

One of the coolest things about the Wampus house (other than its cool name) is the fact that a Wampus is this huge mountain lion that can hypnotize you, and that’s pretty boss. This is why I added the cool cat hat to the outfit. I imagine the Wampus student to be a bit of a gym rat (or gym mountain lion in this case) that has a great sense of humor. This is a fierce house.

That’s it folks! What’s your Ilvermorny house?
